Moving can be a stressful experience at the best of times, but when it comes to a long-distance relocation, this stress can increase tenfold. From the usual concerns around packing, to finding a company willing to move all of your things such a long distance for a reasonable price, preparing everything to enable a seamless move can seem impossible. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to help you prepare no matter how long your ‘long-distance’ move truly is. Below, we’ve pulled together five tips to get you started.
Research Moving Companies
Knowing what kind of moving company you need and what each and every one can offer you at the price they ask is the first key step to a stress-free long-distance move. Do they offer a packing service? Will they come and collect your boxes, or will you need to transport them to a pick-up point? If you’re moving overseas, you might even consider looking into a freight forwarder to ship your things. You may not think you need a freight forwarder who can import from china to transport your belongings, when it comes to ensuring that your possessions turn up at your new property unharmed, this could very well be the sign of an efficient and trustworthy service.
Plan In Advance
Planning ahead is the best way to prepare for your move simply because you have plenty of time to get everything in order long before moving day. Working out what needs to be done and when it needs to be done by will give make you much more organised, not to mention you’ll have deadlines that you can work too. Break down each task into manageable chunks that you can work on each day. This way, it’ll be much easier to keep track of progress and ensuring that everything is ready and raring to go!
Be Ruthless With Clearing Out
We all have a bit of a hoarder nature when it comes to out belongings, but when moving long distance there comes a time where we have to say goodbye to a lot of our hoarded goods. Moving can take a lot of work, and packing takes up a lot of your time so why bother with packing anything that you don’t need? Only pack what is necessary, and throw out anything you don’t need but be ruthless with deciding what you do and don’t need. You can throw out, donate or sell anything you aren’t taking with you!
Keep Anything Important With You During Your Move
Keys to your new home, any documents you need as well as any medications, toiletries and a change of clothes or two are great things to keep with you at all times. This way, any delays or mix-ups with your moving company won’t leave you completely stranded. Similarly, anything of value like laptops, jewellery and other important documents like passports and driving licences should also be kept with you to avoid them being lost in the case of an accident.
Mark And Label Your Boxes
You’ll thank yourself for this later, but make sure that you clearly mark all of your boxes! Colour-code them by room if you can, and it’ll be much easier knowing what boxes will need to go where once you arrive at your new home. Marking each box with a number, the name of the room on the top or any other system that works for you can even aid the removal company in ensuring that your boxes are put somewhere useful to make things easier for you, and for them! Packing is exhausting enough in and of itself, don’t make the unpacking process even more so!
