Adventure Summer Camp for Teenagers

Traveling with your kids is an amazing experience, but allowing them to travel on their own with some level of supervision can be an enriching experience for them. It allows them to start becoming independent human beings and responsible young adults. That is why, now that my oldest son is entering into his teen years, I am starting to research and look for fun summer camps that he can participate in.

Since he is such an athletic and adventurous person, I am looking for something where he can unplug and participate in adventure travel, be outdoors, doing sports and giving back to the society and community.

The best part of all of this is that he isn’t only on board, but he is also really excited about this and is so happy to be planning this along with me. I can surely say that we are both as excited as we are nervous about this sort of adventure. He has never traveled without me.

Even though I made sure to teach him to take care of his luggage and personal property, traveling alone is always different from doing it with parents. Now he will be 100% responsible for his stuff.

I would like some camp or program that involves volunteering with kids or with animals. It would be awesome if it could also be abroad. As I mentioned, he has only traveled with me and learning about a new place and culture on his on can be an incredible learning experience for him.

Don’t get me wrong, summer camps in the US are a lot of fun! They are some of my favorite childhood memories. But him being able to get to know a new place and travel without his parents to take care of every detail, is much more enriching. They also get the opportunity to make friends from more varied backgrounds and cultures.

Another requirement for me is that he is able to unplug and leave technology and social media behind. That way he gets to focus on the activities and his new friends. There is nothing better than being able to be present and focused on what you are experiencing and not worrying about stuff on the internet. I want him to experience that.

Now, for his requirements, all he wants is a summer camp where he can either explore forests, do stuff like surfing, scuba diving, mountain biking, climbing or any new and exciting sport. Since he is a foodie just like me, he also wants to try new and interesting food.

The best part of it all is that I get to plan a family trip on the day that we reunite with him. There are so many possibilities, I can’t wait. And my youngest, who is only eight, is already planning his adventure.

It will be so much fun!

If any of you have had an experience with summer camps abroad, either as a parent or as a teenager who experienced one I’d love to learn all about what you liked, disliked and recommend.
