The Ins & Outs Of Planning A City Break

Things to Do in Seattle

City breaks can make a fantastic getaway, whether for a night or two, a long weekend, or a week-long break, city trips can make great escapes. That is if you are smart about how you plan them. The fact is that city breaks can make a refreshing difference to how you would usually travel, because unlike a ‘summer vacation’, they tend to have more focus to them. Instead of lounging by the pool or the beach all day, you have a schedule in place and a range of things that you want to see and do.

With city breaks, the key factor is to plan your break out in meticulous detail. If you want to ensure that your break gives you the fantastic trip away that you were hoping for, planning is crucial. City breaks can offer a trip that is interesting, exciting and relaxing; it’s just a case of taking the time to plan things carefully. If this is your first city break – or your first city break for a while – it is important to take note of the tips and advice below to ensure that your next break is a fun and memorable one.

 Choose the right city

The first rule of planning an incredible city break is to choose the right city. The truth of the matter is that not every city is ideal for tourists to explore, so finding the right one is crucial. It’s also important to realize that while some cities are perfectly fine for longer city breaks of five days or more, others are better for shorter breaks.

When choosing the city to head to for your next break, make sure to research it carefully, so that you can find that perfect place. You want somewhere that offers a combination of different features and will be interesting, exciting, and enjoyable to explore. If you’ve already visited a city before, then it’s probably best to choose somewhere new to head to. After all, what’s exciting about visiting somewhere that you’ve already been to?

Be selective about your accommodation

The Accommodation that you select for your break could be a defining factor of how successful your trip will be. That’s why it is so important to take your time choosing where to stay. The accommodation that you book for your trip can make or break your time away, so it’s worth spending some time choosing the best option.

Consider the location of the accommodation on offer. Where do you want your hotel or hostel to be located? Do you want to be close to where all the action is or would you prefer to stay in a quieter location? If you are staying somewhere like Boston, for instance, which is a walking city due to its high levels of congestion, staying in a central hotel is vital, as that way it’s easier to get around. However, in cities that it’s easier to drive in, a central hotel is not the be all and end all of your trip.

Then there is the price to consider. The accommodation that you select will also depend on your budget. If you have a smaller budget, then you may want to consider either choosing a hotel that is further out, as the further accommodation is from the city center, the cheaper it will be. Or, you might want to consider opting for a budget-friendly accommodation option like a hostel, guesthouse or Airbnb over a hotel.

When booking somewhere to stay, it’s also worth thinking about the local amenities that are on offer as well as what facilities that accommodation has. Do you want to stay at a hotel with a restaurant or is this not important to you? Is having self-catered accommodation a must for you? Do you want to stay somewhere with a bar for socializing? Is having a supermarket nearby important? These are all factors that it is important to take into account.

Be more creative than just museums and historical sights

Every city is home to a range of museums and historical sights, and while these are great to explore, they aren’t the be all and end all of city breaks. To ensure that your next city break is as memorable as possible it’s important to be more creative about what you see and do. Spend some time doing your research online, to ensure that you know about all of the best sights and attractions on offer in the city that you are visiting.

The kinds of attractions that you want to look out for are things like water parks – these can be a lot of fun and a great way to relax and have a laugh. Research the city that you are going to carefully and see what comes up; for instance, in Boston, aside from the museums and galleries, there is also a Boston escape room, an incredible aquarium, and a world-famous baseball park. The key to having a successful city break is making time to dig a little deeper and find out all the very best things about a destination.

If you arrive and still aren’t sure what to see and do while you are in your city of choice, the best thing to do is ask a local for advice. The fact is that any local will know the area better than a guidebook ever could, so asking them could be a great way to learn about more of the city’s most interesting sights and attractions.

Eat like a king (or queen)

If there is one thing that can ruin any break, it’s bad food. That’s why it is so vital to take the time to research the local food scene before heading off on your trip. A quick look on Trip Advisor isn’t enough; you need to take the time to read other reviews and guides to the food on offer so that you can gain a better idea of the best places to drink and dine in the city that you are visiting. From classy restaurants to street vendors, you want to know where all of the city’s hidden gems are when it comes to food.

Hopefully, the tips and advice above will help to make the process of planning a city break that little bit easier and more enjoyable.
