Ten Things to Think About for Your Romantic Anniversary Vacation

Congratulations! You have a special anniversary coming up and you want to celebrate by planning a romantic Vacation. You may even be thinking about renewing your vows while there. So now what? What do you need to think about to make this vacation dream a reality?

While a vacation is the perfect way to celebrate your anniversary, planning is key to make sure that your trip is all that you’re dreaming of. Here are some of the most important things you’ll want to think about.

  1. Location: Choose a place that speaks to what you as a couple enjoy. If you hate the sand, don’t plan a Caribbean beach vacation. Likewise if you’re not the rugged outdoorsy type, spending time at a mountain retreat may not be the best option for you. Be honest about what you do and do not enjoy – this is your anniversary and you don’t want to spend it having a miserable time.
  2. Arrival Requirements: If you’re planning a visit to a Caribbean destination, be mindful that every island has different COVID testing protocols – and that will likely be the case for the foreseeable future. You’ll need to make sure you know what is specifically required for your particular island – and then stay up to date as things may change. Your experienced travel professional can help with this.
  3. Departure Requirements: As of the end of January 2021, the United States (as well as Canada) now require anyone entering the country from an international destination (including residents who are returning from a trip) to provide evidence of a negative COVID test (or proof of having had the illness) within 72 hours prior to boarding the plane to the U.S./Canada. If you can’t supply either of these, you will not be permitted to board. Many resorts now offer the required testing on site so that guests do not have to leave the resort – and many offer this testing for free. You’ll want to know which do – and do not – offer this.
  4. COVID Vaccinations: As vaccinations become more widespread, being vaccinated (or not being vaccinated) may play a role in travel – but in what way we do not know at this time. That being said, it is super important to keep up with how all of this is affecting travel, as there will be ongoing changes throughout the coming year at least. Your travel specialist will be a godsend in helping you figure it out.
  5. Your Travel Dates: When is the best time for you to visit your dream destination? While generally when school is in session will yield the lowest prices and smallest crowds, you’ll want to know what is best specifically for your location. Things like weather and special events will play into the best time for you to visit so you can plan accordingly.
  6. Vacation Value: What kinds of resorts are available at your destination – and what is (or is not) included? All resorts are not equal and cheapest is not always best. Choose wisely here to make sure you’re not only getting a great price but also great value.
  7. Will You Need a Passport: If you’re traveling internationally, check the expiration on your passport, as many locations will require the expiration date to be at least 6 months after your trip. If you need a new one, apply early as turnaround time has increased over the past year due to the pandemic. And while you’re at it, be sure to note if you’ll need a visa or if there are any other requirements for your location such as specific vaccinations.
  8. Activities and Dining: Will you be doing anything special on your vacation – as in, anything special that may require advance reservations? Things like tours, special experiences and excursions, spa treatments, and even dining all may require reservations in advance so be sure to check that out well before you depart, so you don’t miss out on that one thing you were so excited to experience! Again….your travel agent will be happy to assist you with all of this!
  9. Pack Wisely – While packing for many of us involves a frantic “throw it all in the largest suitcase at the last minute” episode, the fact is that with a little planning, you can pack smaller, and pack smarter. Look at the weather and plan clothes that will be appropriate. Consider layers and items that will work with multiple outfits and color coordinate to make that easier. Look at toiletries and see what may be available at your resort so you don’t bring what you don’t need. Don’t forget things like sunscreen, simple first aid items, and things like band aids, and advil. Lastly, think about all the things you plan on doing at your destination, and plan accordingly. The goal here is to bring everything you may need (to avoid paying high prices for it at your destination), but not bring more than you need. It’s a dance that can be done – even in a carry on – but not easily at the last minute!
  10. Use a Travel Specialist. By now you probably noticed that “your travel agent can help” was mentioned a number of times in this article. And the simple reason for this is that your travel agent can actually help – a lot. Having the experience of a travel professional who specializes in your destination, knows what you can expect, and is there to help you with any/all questions or problems you have, is truly the best way to have the anniversary trip of your dreams. Travel agents care about their clients in a way that no online booking company ever will. And in a world that is increasingly complex when it comes to travel, having that personal attention and experience is invaluable.

So there you have it – all the things that you will want to think about as you plan for your romantic anniversary getaway. There’s no better way to celebrate your love and planning well will ensure that you do truly create memories that are priceless!
