Stop Being so Hard on Yourself – It’s Okay to be on Day One Again

On the first full week of living in Ottawa again and adjusting to my latest chapter in my personal and professional life, I found myself being on “Day One” of my physical fitness journey. Yes, again.

At this point in my life I’ve lost touched with the amount of times that this has been the case. But maybe that isn’t the right way to look at it anymore. Maybe, finally, I have come to terms with the fact that “Day One” is a blessing and a way to refocus vs the negative connotation around “reset”. A means of forgiving the past, embracing my humanity, and stop holding on to the idea of it as a failure of no longer being where I thought I should / would be.

I guess I should harken the fact that this all stemmed from losing my Fitbit Versa 3 – the latest release from my longest lasting relationship with a piece of wearable tech. Click here to check out my love affair with this well-known industry leading in wearable tech.

Having had a Fitbit on my wrist at almost all times for the last few years, I can say I absolutely noticed a difference in the way I was tracking my movement and my fitness goals. Of course, the pandemic hasn’t been helping that, but even the steps I was taking weren’t readily available to inspire me to get moving and I missed that encouragement.

Did Day One go well? I think the photo above stresses the fact that it probably didn’t go as planned, but now that I’m a few days in I find myself slowly making progress. Everyday when my 10K step announcement vibrates on my wrist I feel a little spur of encouragement. Not for anyone else, but for myself. I think that’s the most important lesson I have come to learn – no more sharing numbers on a scale or pant size.

I want to feel happy about myself, for myself, and you’re welcome to enjoy the energy I share in the process. The ability to learn about my sleep, my habits and my body is of course always evolving along with the Fitbit app.

How do I use the Fitbit app?

I’ll be honest, I haven’t utilized the full capabilities of it yet, but I am learning to be more deligent to do so. Maybe it’s the new city, maybe it’s that I’m giving myself the attention I deserve again once a day, but I feel centered again. And that is an incredibly refreshing feeling after months of stress leading up to the move.

I guess the moral of the story is don’t put so much pressure on yourself to look a certain way or be a certain definition of beautiful. You are a beautiful and amazing human as it is, and small gifts to yourself like a Fitbit Versa 3, a walk in the morning to start the day, a nice coffee in the afternoon to spoil yourself are all really good ways to be a little more kind to yourself, your body and your mind. This past year and a bit hasn’t been easy, but I can assure you that you’re doing great.
