Hiking to Halls Creek Overlook

The first time I drove down Burr Trail, I saw the trailhead for Halls Creek Overlook.  I told myself I would do that before I left.  Well, I didn’t.  I did hike to a different overlook though, so I say it still counts.

From Bullfrog, it’s maybe a half hour drive?  I’m not 100% sure.  Follow it to the T and go left where it turns to dirt.  Take the first left turn you come across.  There is another dirt road leading to the trail, which is really just the road, but it was too rough to drive on.  There is also a little trailer there and an old animal pen.

The hike isn’t long, it takes about 30 minutes, slightly uphill, but nothing crazy.  It’s good for pretty much anyone.  Along the way you’ll find a bunch of cool rocks that look like glass.  It’s just one section, so keep your eyes peeled, but it’s super cool.  And the view is totally worth this short hike, I promise.

Just follow the dirt road to the edge basically.  The views are phenomenal. You’re right across from the Capitol Reef   The views to both sides are of Halls Creek, which eventually goes into Lake Powell.  This is a great place to go to watch the sunset, but it’s also great on a sunny day with some nice wispy clouds.  This is good pretty much any time it’s nice out and I would highly recommend this.

Helpful things:

  • Bring water, as usual, it gets hot here.
  • Give yourself 2-4 hours for this hike, including driving time.  2 should be good, but more wold allow more exploring time.
  • There are rattlesnakes out here, so be aware of that.
  • Be careful at the edge, the drop is not a short one.

Have you been to the Halls Creek Overlook?  What is your favorite hike in Utah?  Do you want to go?
