Things you wish you knew before you visited the Maldives

The Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations you can travel to in the world – and with good reason too. It’s got everything from pristine beaches to shady palm groves. Now, if this is your first time in the Maldives, here are a few things that you should know.

Going Local

Most first-time travellers to the Maldives plan to stick to the beach and the warm waters that border it. While these are admittedly great attractions, there’s a whole lot to the Maldives beyond its coastline. For instance, there’s a lot of local cultures that you can experience and absorb during your time here – particularly in locations like Male.

Alcohol Rules

The majority of the Maldives’ population are of the Islamic faith and this means that there are several rules regarding Alcohol you need to be aware of. For instance, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited in public. You are also not allowed to bring any alcohol into the country.

Dress Code

You’ll want to ensure that you dress conservatively when exploring the Maldives so as not to offend any locals. However, if you’re staying at any beach resort Maldives has on offer – perhaps the Embudu Village – you don’t have to worry about any restriction as long as you remain within resort premises.

The true beauty of the Maldives can be found underneath the waves of the ocean, in the colorful coral reefs that are teeming with life. Of course, you’ll want to capture all this natural beauty – so, don’t forget to pack a waterproof camera with you.
