Novigrad is a lovely fisherman town in Istria, Croatia easy to fall in love with its architectural charms, delicious cuisine and the natural beauty of the landscape.
“A new town”, which is the translation of its name, Novigrad has yet a lot of old and worth to be seen and told about in its past. Over centuries great historical personalities marched through Novigrad and surrounding such as Napoleon Bonaparte as well as Carl the Great and left their mark. As many other places in that region, Novigrad got its city character in the late Antique, between the 4th and 7th century. Throughout history Novigrad has been mentioned in different documents under various names such as Neapolis, Civitas Nova, Emona and Emonia.
Novigrad city walls are assumed to be built during the 13th century as the defence walls which were supposed to protect the citizens from pirate attacks and a powerful influence of the Venetian Republic they did not manage to resist in the end.
The richest period the town experienced during the Frankish state. In Lapidarium Museum in Novigrad you can see a lot of interesting examples from the Carolingian period which draw attention of researchers from all over the world.
And when you get tired of wandering through the intriguing maze of past, visit some of the numerous local restaurants and order a glass of Momjan Muscat (Muškat Momjanski) and Kapešante – pilgrim scallops which are said to taste the best in Novigrad because they are grown in the marine area where seawater mixes with fresh river water.
