80’s Reflections

The neon, bold striking lines drew us to Russian contributor Swill Klitch’s vector Series which nod to pop culture from the 1980’s with undertones of computer generated modernity. A simple, yet truly effective design method. We spoke to him to find out where he came up with the inspiration for the series:

“I was tracking the 80’s Style since 2011, trying to make something nice in this field. I treated it more as an art, more than something with commercial potential. That’s where microstock is good – sometimes you can do crazy works, right as you want it. Those works did not bring any profit, so I took a break and tried again the following year. And the next year. In 2014 I get very close by making a blue landscape with a dark corridor and moon. I was taking an Oleg Skillup’s (a Russian microstock designer) mentorship course and showed him the picture, asked what was wrong and what was missing He told me what to do and the next year I spent studying 80’s themes. I collected a big set of Retro game, cinema and advertising posters. I subscribed to a few channels and blogs on tumblr. I studied the color schemes, watched the movies and music videos.

I was working mainly with original 80’s pictures, but suddenly felt a strong Wave of new style rising: New Retro Wave. It’s not quite the same as 80’s art. The was no such bright colors, deep ideas and techniques in that era. Artists could draw a computer-styled art with a chromed robot without having an actual computer in their studio. Now we have unlimited possibilities, so New Retro Wave is a development, despite it being based on old and glitchy ideas.

The last step for me was to figure out how to make the images fresh and interesting for the modern generation. So I made a list of popular signs and shapes. Triangle and triforces were winners. And they became my first top vectors of this series.

Soon after that, the movie Kung Fury was released on Steam, proving that all my work has right direction.”
