We’ve all heard of Roses. They are the flowers that you see in many movies where the man is trying to make up for something that he has done. They are a beautiful addition to any wedding, and they are so much more. Roses are extremely popular but not many people know much about them beyond the fact that they look beautiful, and smell fantastic. Of course, you don’t have to be interested in learning about roses, but if you think that it might be something that you are interested in, then it’s a good thing that you have come across this article. When Are Roses In Season?

Typically, you can buy roses all year round, but this does not mean that they are in season all year round. As a general idea, roses tend to be in season from around March to June. You should ensure that you water your roses daily in June as this is when it starts to get extremely hot, but it is also when you are going to see the brightest colours. Once it gets to July, this is when you need to start the deheading process to allow new roses to grow.

From the time that you see the rosehead, it should take approximately two weeks for the flower to be in full bloom. Most roses bloom regularly throughout the season, but there are some exceptions to this. For example, some of the old variety of roses may only bloom once a year, where others do so repeatedly. 

Where Are Roses Grown?

Roses are grown all over the world. Most of the types of roses are native to Asia. However, there are some types that can be traced back to being natives of Europe, north west Africa and North America. There are a range of different species of roses, and it depends which species you are looking at as to where they were grown. Hulthemia roses originate from southwest Asia, Platyrhodon roses are from east Asia, Hesperrhodos originate from North America and Rosa come from all over. Each of these types of roses then have separate species that make up the category, and we’re going to be looking a little more at that further down.

The main thing to understand is that you are going to find beautiful roses all over the world. As such, no matter where in the world you are at any given time, you should be able to find the stunning roses that you are searching for.

Are There Different Types Of Roses?

There are over 150 different species of roses, and thousands of hybrids. As such, you can find roses in almost any color and any shape. Nowadays, roses tend to be classified within three main categories, even though this is not the one way to do it. The categories are:

• Wild roses – roses that are grown in the wild without assistance.
• Old garden roses – rose varieties that are bred before 1867.
• Modern garden roses – rose varieties that are bred after 1867.

Of course, we don’t have time to go through all of the different types of roses, so instead we’re going to look at a few, and have a simple list with some others. This is not going to be an extensive list, so if you would like to find out more about specific types of roses there are plenty of guides online to help you find what you are looking for.

Climbing Roses

This name can be quite deceiving, because climbing roses do not climb in the same way that vines do. They have a very stiff, upright cane that can be manually tied along a support. There have been cases of canes reaching fifteen feet and are often repeat bloomers. Large flowers are extremely common with this type of rose, and if they are grown horizontally, more flowers will be produced. 

Shrub Roses

Shrub roses are those that do not fit into any of the other categories. They tend to have traits from both old garden roses and modern roses, making them a unique and beautiful mix. They tend to be rather easy to look after, making them a fantastic choice for anyone who wants roses at home. 

Hybrid Rugosa Roses

This species comes from Northern Japan, Korea, China and Siberia. It’s a very hardy species, and tends to be grouped with the Old Garden Roses even though this is not their official classification. They have a beautiful, strong fragrance and a rich green foliage. They also tend to be disease-resistant which is a bonus. With simple blossoms that come in a limited range of colours, it’s best to enjoy these roses on a bush as they aren’t your typical roses.

As you can see just from this list, there are so many different types of roses, all of which come in different colours, shapes and styles. It depends on what you are looking for as to which rose will suit you best. Some of the most common choices for weddings for example are the Hybrid Tea Rose, the Sweetheart Rose, and Spray roses.

Can You Grow Roses At Home?

If you are going to be growing your roses indoors, they are going to require more care than if you were growing outside. Either way, you need to make sure that you are using a soil mixture that is rich in nutrients to ensure that the roses are getting everything they need. When it comes to planting your roses, the best time to do this is in the autumn or the spring as you will then find the blossoming roses in the summer. 

The simple trick when it comes to watering is to check the soil. If you are noticing that the soil is drying up quite quickly, then you are going to want to water your roses every day to ensure that they are staying hydrated. If the soil is damp, then there is no need to add any more water as the roses have not yet fully got everything from where you last watered them. You should also make sure that you are feeding the roses a couple of times with special mineral fertilizers. 

What Flowers Go Best With Roses?

The first flower that goes beautifully with roses are Clematis. Clematis are a short lower, and will hide the stems of the roses nicely, ensuring that all you see are flowers throughout the entire bouquet. You can always add some greenery to the bouquet if you want to make it look fuller, but the clematis does a wonderful job when paired with roses. Due to the range of colours available with roses, you are sure to find a colour that suits the limited colour palette of the clematis.

Another flower that you should consider is the solomio. It is one of the most common flowers that are added to a bouquet of roses to create the perfect bridal bouquet, as it is a soft beauty. The round petals manage to mix well with a range of different roses, meaning that you could choose practically any of them and still manage to make it look fantastic. The solomio itself is a blushing beauty, and fits well between light coloured roses in particular. 

If you want something that looks romantic, then tulips and roses are a fantastic combination. You can get a variety of colours of tulips such as red, lavender, pink and yellow, all of which mix beautifully with roses. Tulips are happy to sit back and let the roses be the stars of the bouquet, there to enhance the aesthetic of the bouquet without claiming the spotlight.

While it might seem like a rather unusual pairing, roses and sunflowers are a combination that is to die for. Together, they look beautiful and will definitely make an eye-catching bouquet. This combination is not going to be for people who are looking for something subtle, but rather for those who like to stand out and be a little different. 

What Colours Do Roses Come In?

There are a range of colours when it comes to roses, and they all symbolize different things.  If you have ever bought roses for someone in the past, then you will know about all the different choices in colour. However, each colour also has its own meaning, so you want to know which colour depicts your feelings most accurately. We’re not going to be looking at all of the colours that roses come in, just a couple!

Red roses are the universal symbol of love. If you receive red roses from someone anywhere in the world, everyone would be in general agreement that this is how someone says I love you. It also means deep affection in the way of longing. There are, of course, different shades of red as well which have different meanings. The bright red rose indicates romance, whereas a darker red would suggest feelings have not yet been revealed. 

Pink roses are known for symbolizing gratitude, grace and joy. There is a gentleness to these compared with a bright red rose and are often seen as a token of admiration. A dark pink rose is often a way of showing appreciation for someone, and a pale pink is more of a gentle colour that is given on sympathetic occasions. However, due to the range of pinks available, they can be used for nearly anything.

Purple roses are far less common, although they are associated with royalty. Used for happy occasions and celebrations, they indicate adoration. They are intended to make the recipient feel incredibly special.

White is the symbol of purity and innocence, and the rose is no exception to this. White roses are often given at weddings and other happy events such as graduations. They are a beautiful addition to any flower arrangement, or on their own, and often are used as a way to say that the sender was thinking about you. White roses are often used to celebrate new beginnings, and moving forward. 

Are Roses Used For Anything Other Than Aesthetics?

Roses are not just used for aesthetic purposes. You will also have noticed that their fragrance is a popular one due to the oil that is produced from them. A lot of perfumes have rose oil in them to give them a beautiful smell with a particular subtle sweetness. 

There are also areas of medicine and cuisine that benefit from roses, so you might notice this at some point down the line if you are ever looking in a list of ingredients. 

Interesting Facts About The Rose

Let’s finish by looking at a few interesting facts about roses! The most expensive rose was called ‘Juliet’ and sold for 15.8 million back in 2006.

The rose is also the national flower of the United States as it was declared in 1986 by then president, Ronald Reagan.

Rose petals are edible in themselves, meaning that you don’t actually have to do anything to them! They can also be used to make rose water which is created when you soak the petals in water for a little while. This is often used in many different foods, especially in Indian and Chinese cooking.
