Margherita, on the other hand, it is very Italian. The name comes after the Queen Margherita of Savoy, wife of the King Umber I. This Neapolitan pizza is dated back to 1889, which was 28 years after Italy was unified. It was in 1889 that the Queen visited the city of Naples and the chef Raffaele Esposito decided to create a pizza resembling the Italian flag’s color, which is red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil).
2 Margherita x Cheese
Although some people know Margherita pizza as Cheese pizza, there are small differences you should know. As you already know, Margherita comes with mozzarella, tomato, and basil; whereas, the cheese pizza is much more simpler, consisting of tomato sauce and cheese only.
3 Neapolitan Pizza Type
A genuine Neapolitan pizza consists of tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, also the dough has to be wheat flour. There are three official types of Neapolitan pizzas:
- Marinara, which is made with oregano, garlic, and peeled tomatoes;
- Margherita, as you know, comes with peeled tomatoes, sliced mozzarella, and basil;
- Margherita Extra comes with fresh basil, buffalo mozzarella from Campania, and peeled tomatoes
