Brazilian dishes: Have you heard of them? Would you try it?

Today, September 7th is Brazilian independence day and because of that we are going to talk about three different Brazilian Dishes everybody has to try at least once in their lives.

Brazil is a great country and if you have never been there, it’s about time to start planning your trip. It is a continental size country, the fifth largest country in the world with a population of over 200 million people. The four largest countries in the world are Russia, Canada, United States and China. But let’s talk a little bit more about Brazil. Its biggest city is São Paulo, with a population of 11.32 million people, Sampa (as it’s known) is a vibrant city and it’s famous for being a city that never sleeps.

Rio de Janeiro is a must when you go to Brazil. Rio is not only famous for Copacabana beach and the statue of Christ. It is also the birth of Samba and the lay back way of life. From north to the south Brazil has so much to offer. It’s going to take you more than one trip to Brazil to be able to see and learn a little bit of its culture.

Let us, then, talk about the food. The types of food will vary depending on what part of the country you are visiting.

Brazilian Dishes

1 – Feijão Tropeiro

Feijão tropeiro is traditionally from Minas Gerais state. It is made with dried beans, manioc flour and salted dried beef (carne de sol). Feijão tropeiro was the basic meal cattle drovers and wagon drivers used to carry with them. It is delicious and as the time passed some other things were incorporated into it, Pork rind, sausage, and eggs.

It is such a traditional food for the Mineiros (people from Minas Gerais) that you can go to a soccer match and eat some feijão tropeiro with beer while supporting your team.

2 – Acarajé

First of all acarajé has more calories than you can imagine. It is traditionally from Bahia state, North-East Brazil. Acarajé is a deep-fried patty of crushed black-eyed peas, pureed onions, and palm oil. All of that is then deep fried in more palm oil and then they slice it open and stuff it with dried shrimp and vatapá ( vatapá is made from bread, shrimp, coconut milk, ground peanuts and palm oil mashed into a creamy paste).

Acarajé has its roots in African cooking. Bahia was the first state Portuguese got they foot on when they discovered Brazil, and it had a big slavery community. Acarajé is delicious and you must try it.

3 – Açaí

One of the most famous Brazilian dishes is açaí. It’s a round black-purple fruit usually found on the Amazon, north of the country and it’s commonly known as açaí berry. The fruit is so popular all over the country and there are several different ways of eating it. People that live in the Amazon area usually eat açaí as a meal, for lunch and or dinner.

However, the rest of the country uses açaí with different porpuses. It’s not hard to find an açaí shop wherever you go. It is similar to an ice cream shop, but it’s usually only açaí variations. The two most common ways of having açaí are the smoothie and the cream. It has a lot of carbs, so people usually have açaí before or after going to the gym.
