Golf, Graphics and GoDaddy Filled My Day Off

A week ago I was goofing off. That’s right, I didn’t do any work last Friday. Of course that’s if work means sitting in front of a computer. You see, I was attending the Phoenix Open (known by the corporate name of the Waste Management Open) with a friend from Godaddy.

Thanks to GoDaddy, we had some amazing seats just next to the Tee Box on the loudest hole in golf. Yes, I am a very happily part of the GoDaddy Pro program and do quite a lot of business with them. A good friend who works at GoDaddy had planned to take his wife and she has to work that day so I got the call.

Now let’s talk about things that can be learned at this mega event, because there is marketing and Graphics everywhere. Last Friday, more than 160,000 people attended the tournament with more than 20,000 of them seated around the 16th hole. Yes, that is only one day and there were more than 200,000 who attended the next day. That means there are many companies who want to promote their wares to the people in attendance.

There is a Sponsor tent at the entrance and everyone has to walk through it. Literature is handed out and Signage is on display. Plenty to observe for those in the graphics business. On the course there is also a lot of signage to help patrons find their way or simply to find food and beverage.

Around the hole (above is our view of the tee box) there is also sponsor signage in a variety of places. There was also digital signage showing the leaders, but it also promoted social media. It was suggested to use the hashtags #greenestshow (short for Greenest Show on Grass) and #loudestholeingolf. I used those exact hashtags when I tweeted the top picture and it got retweeted by Waste Management, the sponsor of the tournament.

So while I was goofing off, I did take in the graphics around me. I also got to network with some of the folks at GoDaddy and the other companies sponsoring skyboxes. It was a really fun day off and I might even have done just a little work while there.
