Perhaps you think that because I’m a photographer that my children are so easy to photograph. I’m going to let you in on a secret, the real truth is sometimes that’s true and other times….as my daughter would say, “NO WAY, NO HOW!”
Every year my family and I take a vacation in Ocean City, NJ. It’s right before the twins’ birthdays and since they were babies, I’ve done a Photo Shoot of them on the beach. Of course, children can be unpredictable but as they get older it gets easier right? We were surely moving in that direction. I thought.
The first year’s photo shoot did not go so smoothly. There was a stumble while lowering one tiny person onto the sand which didn’t go over well and there was also A LOT of sand eating! Still, there’s a photo from that session that I will love forever.
By the next year, the girls thought this was the most awesome thing ever. The girls danced, posed and they giggled the whole time.
The third year I brought in some sunflowers and we even were able to get a family photo of all of us.
The fourth year was twirling and arabesques. We had a bit of wind during the first shoot and one of my daughters got sand in her eye….but we tried again on a different night and it was great.
Surely year five would be a piece of cake!
Did I mention that I have put a portrait of them from each photo session up in our living room each year? This is kind of an important tradition for our family. (OK, OK it’s a really big deal for me! There I said it.) I had the white dresses purchased well in advance like I always do. We timed the sunset on previous days so we knew exactly when to get the girls ready. We only had one free day to do this and THIS WAS IT. We made our way to the beach.
We took a few photos on the path and except for some wind, things were going great!
We had some extra time before the sun went down and the sky started to change colors…..so we were standing around chatting. I took some photos of my husband’s family and when I turned around, one of my lovely daughters had decided to go for a run……down the beach….as far as she could go. (And, it wasn’t even the daughter that everyone thought might do that!)
We figure, she’ll turn around at some point right? No. And, the sun starts to set and she STILL hasn’t turned around. So, my hubby chases her, finally gets her back and then…..She runs right up the dune!
When she is finally wrangled into somewhat of a posed position she’s still got the goofy in her! But….there are two rules of photographing kids 1) just keep shooting and 2) you only need one good shot! These are not it.
I still want a shot of the girls together, so we channeled her energy into some superhero poses.
It was getting pretty windy so we couldn’t do much more. It’s not always the perfect photo shoot but I still have photos that I love. Even another family photo! (Thanks Aunt Jane!)
Now I need at least 11 months to recover! It’s MUCH easier photographing 13 year olds!
