The Difference Between Solid Masonry And Brick Veneer

When we see a Brick wall inside or outside of a home, we are likely to believe that the entire wall is made up from layers of bricks. We know, though, that if a building was built after the 1950s, there is a high chance that the wall is made from brick veneering.

What Is Brick Veneer?

Brick veneer is a method of construction in which the support structure for a building is made from concrete, steel or wooden frames. Bricks are then used on the outside of the frames for aesthetic purposes.

With Brick Veneer Walls, there is a large open cavity between the one layer of bricks and the backup wall.

What’s The Difference Between Brick Veneer And Solid Masonry?

THERMAL PROPERTIES

One of the biggest differences between a brick veneer and a solid masonry brick wall is the efficiency of storing heat. Bricks have poor thermal insulation properties, meaning that they absorb heat and fail to stop the transfer of it.

Because brick veneer utilizes a small cavity inside of the wall, additional insulation materials can be added inside. This means that brick veneer walls have efficient insulation properties.

STRUCTURE

Brick veneer walls use a cavity and are attached to a backup wall. They do not support structure.

Solid masonry walls are the structural support themselves and do not have any cavities.

PRICE

Solid masonry brick walls are far more expensive than brick veneer walls. This is due to the increased number of bricks needed to build the structural layers.

Benefits of Solid Masonry Brick Walls

  • Solid bricks are used as the structure’s support and are far more stable. Brick structures are extremely reliable and resilient and could last for centuries.
  • There is no risk of deterioration of frames or internal structures, whereas brick veneer walls are prone to termite infestations.

Benefits of Brick Veneer Walls

  • Easy to install due to only using one layer of bricks.
  • Does not require a complex foundation and support system like solid masonry brick walls.
  • Cavity in the walls helps with insulation.
  • Durable and fireproof
  • Aesthetic and affordable.

Bottom line:

Both construction methods are incredible investments to your home. Whichever one you decide to go with will be determined by your budget, thermal insulation requirements, and overall recommendation by your local builder.
