Interior Design With Your Whole Family in Mind

Tackling an interior design project at home is a fun way to express your personality and make sure your home design fits your needs. But, it’s important to keep your whole family in mind when getting creative with your living space.

What is your current living situation like? If you have kids running around the house, your home design will probably be different than when you were single and living alone. It’s also a good idea to think about how your current design could impact future changes to your home.

Whether you’re working from home, living with your spouse, watching kids all day, or trying to make your home more pet-proof/pet-friendly, you can accomplish a lot by switching up your design efforts.

Let’s look at a few creative ways to keep your whole family in mind when you’re taking on a home design project, and how you can accomplish a design overhaul even when you’re on a budget.

Prepping for a Pet

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, people adopted pets and cleared out animal shelters across the country at a record pace. Now, you might still be trying to adjust your home to fit the needs of your four-legged friend. Or, maybe you’re planning on getting a new puppy for the kids (or, let’s be honest, yourself) and you want your interior design to be more pet-friendly.

Some of the best changes to make when pet-proofing your home include:

  • Removing hanging objects
  • Keeping clutter off the floor
  • Storing away harmful substances/food
  • Keeping poisonous plants away
  • Using crates to keep your dog/cat safe during the day

If you’re away from home for work, another great investment is to install a camera or two wherever your furry companion will be during the day. Most smart home security cameras can be viewed from your phone, so you can check in at any point to make sure your pet is safe and comfortable. Some cameras will even send you an alert when there is motion or noise, so you’ll never miss an important opportunity to ensure your pet is okay.

Striking a Better Work-Life Balance

A 2021 Gallup poll found that 45% of U.S. employees work from home full-time. It’s a trend that’s predicted to continue as technology keeps advancing. While remote work was already on the rise before the pandemic, it’s seen a major boom over the last two years. If you recently started working from home or you’re planning on making a switch, you might need to make some design changes that meet your needs and allow you to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

While working from home has its perks, it’s also easy to get distracted. Without a set schedule, you might be tempted to sleep in, do things with your family during the day, or procrastinate on your daily job tasks. Alternatively, you could also develop a work addiction, focusing all of your time and attention on your career, no matter the time of day.

Having a dedicated Office space in your home can help you achieve a better work-life balance and keep you from going to either extreme.

You don’t have to have a lot of space or even a spare room for an office. A distraction-free area and some key office essentials will set you up for success, including things like:

  • A computer
  • A desk
  • A comfortable chair
  • High-speed Internet
  • Good lighting

Setting up a home office space can be an investment. But, combined with a daily routine, it’ll keep you on track with your work life and personal life. As a bonus, if you ever plan on selling your home, a dedicated home office space can boost its value since more people are working remotely. Don’t be afraid to have some fun with your office space once you have the essentials laid out. Decorate it to fit your personality, and you’ll be more likely to feel happier and more productive while you’re working.

Getting the Family Involved

If you truly want to design your home interior with your family in mind, why not get them involved? Open up the floorplan if you have kids who like to play all day. Hang their artwork in frames on their bedroom walls. Display your family photos tastefully and proudly throughout your home.

There are plenty of ways to include your family in your home design, but don’t feel like you have to do it on your own. Talk to your kids about how they’d like to update their bedrooms. Think about what would look good now and how they can grow with certain designs in the future. Some interior upgrades can end up being great family projects you can work on together.

Your interior design should be a reflection of your family’s style and needs. Whether you plan on staying in your home forever or you eventually want to sell, don’t lose your personality amid your upgrades. Keep these ideas in mind to keep your family at the forefront of your design efforts, and you’ll have more fun bringing your home to life in both practical and creative ways.
