Though it’s an interesting way to travel the world, we’ve been critical of Cruise ships after learning just how polluting they can be. Indeed, traditional cruise ships have a terrible environmental record. Luckily, there are some cruise companies that are addressing the issue head on.
The Norwegian company Hurtigruten has two new ships, using an industry-first electric hybrid propulsion, resulting in far fewer emissions. This is especially important in the northern regions where cruises visit, like Greenland, Alaska, and Antarctica.
The MS Roald Amundsen and the MS Fridtjof Nansen will enter service later this year, and offer all the latest modern amenities, as well as a distinctively Scandinavian modern design. We’re encouraged to see major ships like this adopt the same type of battery hybrid technology that cars have had for years. We imagine it’ll be a number of years before we see cruise ships be entirely emissions-free, but this is a step in the right direction. Via Uncrate:
