3-Step PhotoShop Tutorial for Using Paper Textures as Photo Filters

Want to take your images to the next level? From macro images of insects to eye-catching selfies, paper textures can be used as photo filters for just about everything. And the process is pretty simple! Below you’ll find a 3 step PhotoShop Tutorial that you can use as a guide for applying paper textures as filters.

Step 1: Open your base image in Photoshop. This photo can be a self-portrait, an image of your pet, or anything you like. This photograph will function as the foundation of your photo manipulation. I

Note: If you want the paper texture to be prominent, consider making your image grayscale before moving to step 2.

STEP 1: OPEN YOUR BASE IMAGE IN PHOTOSHOP

Step 2: Download your favorite photo textures from StockVault then import them into your PhotoShop document with your base image. Make sure the paper texture is the top layer.

Note: You may have to adjust the size of the imported image to fill the frame

STEP 2: ADD YOUR PAPER TEXTURE

Step 3: Apply a blending mode of your choice. After your preferred blending mode is applied, play with opacity levels to achieve your desired look. Overlay, soft light, and multiply are good blending modes to start with. But there are no right or wrong answers. So, experiment!

Note: You can take your photo manipulation a step further by adjusting levels, brightness, and contrast or adding Photoshop-native filters such as grain or gaussian blur.
