Winter Blues

“Is this Winter ever going to end?”, my five year old asked me this morning, stricken with a bad case of cabin fever. And who could blame her?  For two straight months now, the family has been huddled up indoors, wishing that the temperature would climb a few dozen degrees so that we could at least take the dog for a nice walk. In doldrums of winter, all of us can’t help but long for the days when we can feel sunshine on our skin, sit by the pool with our friends and neighbors, or go out into nature without having the cold wind slap you across the face.

So what is a family to do when you are stuck inside, and the relentless cold has you talking about moving to Florida or California (like it does every year about this time)?

Let the list below give you a few ideas on how to survive the winter blues:

Play Some Board Games  –  In our family, we love board games.  Sometimes we play with just our own family, other times we invite over friends and neighbors. A few family favorites are Ticket to Ride, Forbidden Island, and Apples to Apples.  We also have been known to bust out an impromptu game of charades or Pictionary. There are some awesome word generators available on the internet for both games.

Get in a Workout – Being stuck indoors can lead to boredom and depression. And in turn, boredom and depression can lead to lots and lots of eating. If this sounds familiar, you probably should consider exercise as a way to pass the time in the cold winter months. Whether you are working out at home, or you have a gym membership, working out has also been known to improve your spirits and general outlook on life.

Binge Watch a Good Show – When it comes to television, I try to be intentional about my watching. This means that unless I have something that I *want* to watch, I don’t turn on the TV. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t tons of shows out there that are very much worth watching. If you find a good show that you are into, there is nothing wrong with firing up some popcorn and cuddling with your honey under a blanket, and tearing through a few seasons of “Game of Thrones“, “Stranger Things“, or recent favorite “The Good Place“.

Spring Cleaning Doesn’t Have to Wait – For some reason, people like to wait until Spring to start cleaning out their house, getting rid of what they don’t need, or perhaps tackling that big home improvement project. But why wait until the weather improves and your entertainment options start expanding? Why not use the cold and boring months to get your house in order, so that you can spend the warmer spring and summer months out enjoying yourself?

Explore the Internet – As a blogger and internet entrepreneur, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention all of the entertainment options that the internet has to offer. From watching live concerts of your favorite bands on Youtube, to chatting with your friends (who you never see, because it is too cold) on social media, the internet really does offer endless ways to pass the time. You could start a blog about one of your favorite hobbies and see if you can perhaps turn into an income generator for your family. If you just want to have a little fun, I have mentioned in the past that I enjoy online gaming and playing poker online. Sites like Vegas Palms online casino are a ton of fun, as long as you are responsible with your funds (They make it easy to view your transaction history).

How are you passing the time during these frustrating winter months?  Is anyone else ready or Spring to arrive??
