Age Appropriate Chores for Kids
Do your kids help out around the home with chores? While every family if different, I think that age appropriate Chores are important for kids to learn at an early age. It helps them to master necessary skills that will serve them throughout their life, teaches them responsibility, discipline, how to work together as a team, and they develop more appreciation for things.
It may seem that many kids don’t even have time for chores, after all, today’s children are busier than ever! They have school, homework, extracurricular activities, the need for some free time, and yet they still need time set aside for chores. It’s just about finding the right balance for your family.
When assigning your child new chores just remember that every child is different – some may easily perform their chores and others may struggle a bit in the beginning. The first few times they do a chore they may not do it as nice and neat as you may like, but be patient, the more practice they get the better they will become.
Below is a chart to help you determine which chores are best for each age group. If there are other chores your child performs that isn’t on the list, let us know in the comments!
2-3 yr olds – Toddler
- Make bed
- Fold wash cloths
- Put dirty clothes in laundry
- Put toys and books away
- Dust
4-5 – Preschool, plus all previous chores
- Put clean clothes away
- Feed and water pets
- Water indoor plants
- Match socks
- Clean room
- Help fill dishwasher
- Wipe up spills
- Take out waste basket trash
6-9 – Elementary
- Sweep
- Fold their laundry
- Wipe counters/tables
- Empty dish washer
- Pull weeds
- Rake leaves
- Set the table
- Clear dishes after meals
- Put away groceries
- Make own snacks
- Help with dinner
- Pack lunches
- Vacuum
10-12 – Pre-teen
- Take out trash
- Wash laundry
- Mop
- Help prep for meals
- Make easy meals
- Wash pots and pans
- Clean windows
- Clean out vehicle
13+ – Teen
- Mow lawn
- Prepare meals
- Clean out refrigerator and freezer
- Babysit siblings
- Clean house and bathrooms
- Meal plan
- Help with home repairs
- Wash vehicles
