How To Be Smarter In Just 30 Minutes Per Week

Do you ever feel like you’ve gotten a little bit dumber as you aged?

I often do. I look back at some of the things I wrote or did 15 years ago, and I’m actually impressed. They were really smart.

And then I look at what I’ve done recently, and I don’t quite feel the same way…

It’s not an inevitable fact of aging, however. Most modern research points to the fact that we can not only retain our full mental faculties as we age, but we can actually improve them.

Here’s a new study on one way to do that:

Your Brain On Exercise: 30 Minutes Of Physical Activity Makes Your Brain More ‘Plastic’

What the researchers found is that a single exercise period of just 30 minutes once per week actually increased the brain plasticity of the study participants.

Plasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change physically, functionally, and chemically, and it’s the primary characteristic that allows a brain to stay functional and to keep getting smarter and more capable.

The beauty is that even small amounts of exercise appear to have significant positive effects on the brain. Personally, I think it’s a great habit to simply exercise every day (not intensely everyday, but just as a way to release endorphins and feel much better). However, if you can’t get up for that, then at least psyche yourself up to get some extra movement a few days per week.
