What causes age spots?
As we mentioned before, years of sun exposure is the main factor behind the appearance of age spots. However, frequent use of tanning beds can also be responsible.
Our skin contains melanin, a pigment which resides in the upper skin layer. Once ultraviolet light rays come in contact with our skin, the melanin production increases and forms a tan which is supposed to protect the deeper skin layers from damage. If you want to prevent the appearance of the spots, you need to limit your sun exposure.
Age spots generally appear on people with lighter skin, although everyone can be affected. They are usually harmless, but if they start varying in size and shape frequently, it’s best to consult a doctor as this might be an early symptom of melanoma. Visit a doctor if you notice the following age spot changes:
- Dark pigment;
- Unusual color combination;
- Rapid size increase;
- Irregular age spot borders;
- Itching, redness or bleeding.
Age spots home remedy
Age spots are usually treated with laser therapy, bleaching creams, chemical peels or dermabrasion. However, instead of these invasive methods, you can try the following natural remedy which can work just as well, if not better.
Dr. Doug Willen, the author of Quantum Paleo, suggest using a natural combination of Apple Cider Vinegar and onion juice to diminish age spots. Onions contain antioxidant compounds which can neutralize free radicals in your body, and the alpha hydroxyl content of apple cider vinegar can eliminate dead skin and make way for the new skin underneath. A lot of people have used this combination for a natural skin glow.
Preparation and use
Chop one onion and crush it with a pestle and mortar, then put the juice in a blender along the apple cider vinegar. Blend the mixture for a short time and apply it on your age spots with a cotton ball. For best results, use raw, organic apple cider vinegar.
