Fun Cook-off Event at the Durban Campus

Capsicum Culinary Studio, South Africa’s largest Chef school, hosted a successful cook-off event at its Durban Campus on 12 May 2016.

Media guests and students teamed up to “slice, sizzle and serve” up a locally-inspired dish which was demonstrated by well-known Executive Chef Faraaz Panaino of the Greyville Racecourse.

Chef Faraaz and Capsicum Chef Lecturer, Afzal Mohammed took charge in kitchen and introduced the dish that the guests were required to cook – an aromatic butter chicken and naan bread. There was an added twist of a secret ingredient to keep the amateur cooks on their toes – the ever-versatile cauliflower.

The idea behind the concept was to expose guests to the immersive experience of being in an industry-relevant kitchen and getting a tangible ‘feel’ for what it would be like in industry. Partnering up with a chef student also allowed the students to gain experience in a different dimension of the culinary industry by interacting with media and networking.

After the final bell was rung, the teams took their dishes to the judging room where each had a turn to share their experience and creative process with the judges, following which the winners were announced.

It was an event that promised an afternoon of interactive fun, and delivered on that!
