Candy Apple Graveyard!!

Happy Halloween everyone!!   Hope you all find yourselves well today.  I've been dying to post a recipe for Halloween, because it's one of my favorite days of the year.  My kids and I have been known to conjure up some pretty amazing makeup to match our Halloween costumes (yes, I've been known to dress up too) and exciting recipes OOOOOHH!  Last year I went to the company Halloween party dressed as a zombie, it was so well received that I was interviewed about the work we do there in costume.  All I used was scar putty, fake blood, lots of green and black makeup and a black hoodie.  It's really all about the makeup, once you have that down all you need is some soiled, ripped clothes and your a zombie.

We love to prepare Halloween treats, one of our favorites is the Candy Apple.   In the name of curiousity and this blog and perhaps....science?  I tried something a little different with my candy apples, I was looking for a gory, slimy green on them and I believe that was achieved, HOORAAH!  We also made some of the traditional red, so don't be alarmed or do.... In looking for a theme for my apples, I came up with a whimsical candy apple graveyard, made up of our favorite Halloween candies.  Below find the recipe for our candy apples and  graveyard setup and get treated.....GET TREATED!! AAHAAHAHAAHA!   Yes....anyway....have a great Halloween and enjoy!

CANDY APPLES

8 Fuji apples
8 wood skewers
1/3 cup of water
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
non-stick cooking spray
cookie sheet
Garnish such as sprinkles, chopped nuts, coconut shavings your choice.

Note:  A separate batch of this has to be made for the green, using 2 teaspoons of green food coloring, rather than red  Apple type can be substituted, but try to avoid red delicious as the green may not be too apparent on them.

Skewer your apples and set them aside.  In a heavy saucepan add water, sugar, cream of tartar, lemon juice and let the sugar melt some on medium heat.  Then add the food coloring.  If you have a candy thermometer a temperature of 310 is best, if not, just wait until all sugar is melted down and dip a metal spoon in it, if the mixture gets thicker as it runs down the spoon, it's done if not let it simmer a little more.  Get ready here, you need to be quick, have all your garnishes poured out onto plates however you want them arranged.  Once the mixture is done your going to dip your apples in it (if the color is not as dark as you want you can dip it again immediately) quickly dip the candy coated apple in the garnish and place on non-stick sprayed pan, repeat for the rest of the apples.

CANDY GRAVEYARD

A warm colored tray
assortment of candy corn including little pumpkins
chopped walnuts
gummy worms
halloween sprinkles
colored sprinkles
decorated candy apples

Simply arrange apples on the tray, then pour the candy around them.  You can arrange the pumpkins and gummy worms to your liking and there you have it!  I have to say it....how do you like them apples?
