Grow your own sprouts at home!

Sprouts add a variety of flavors and crunch to meals, but did you know you can grow them at home, saving you a trip to the grocery store? They have many nutritional benefits adding fiber, vitamins, and protein into your diet. Growing Mason Jar Sprouts with this simple kitchen hack assures you have this superfood year round. Using these easy steps, you’ll have your batch ready in less than a week!

Supplies for Mason Jar Sprouts:

  • A wide-mouth jar with a lid, but you’ll just need the ring.
  • Sprouting seeds: You can find these locally at health food or specialty stores, or online.
  • A fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
  • A container with a lid for storage after.

Easy sprout growing kitchen hack:

  • Put 1-2 tablespoons of your selected seeds in your wide-mouth jar.
  • Cover the seeds with enough cool water to cover about two inches above the seeds and place the fine mesh or cheesecloth on top, securing with the lid ring.
  • Let the seeds soak for 8-12 hours, remembering not to over soak them.
  • After soaking, tip the jar over to drain the water and rinse them by pouring cool water through the top, making sure to drain them thoroughly. Pro-tip: After draining, place the jar in a cool, dark place at an angle, pointing the top down on paper towels!
  • Repeat rinsing and draining every day for 3-5 days, making sure to swirl the water around the seeds before draining.
  • When you see most of the seeds sprouted, remove from the jar. This happens around day 5.
  • Fill a bowl with fresh, cool water. Place the sprouts in the water and press down. This will de-hull them and the hulls will rise to the top. Pour off the water/hulls.
  • Store your freshly-grown superfood in a very well-drained container in the fridge with a lid. You can also line the container with paper towels to absorb excess water.
  • Sprouts will keep for a week.
