Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

This attractive Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie Bowl made with avocado, almond milk, and chocolate protein powder is so creamy and decadent, it’s hard to believe that it’s good for you too!

My husband was watching me as I made this Smoothie bowl, and commented that I seem to enjoy playing with my food. I felt like I was in art class trying to figure out how to decorate this Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie Bowl with fruits, nuts, and seeds. That’s one of the best things about smoothie bowls; you have fun making them as well as eating them! Sitting down to eat this was like eating a decadent chocolate pudding, but really, every ingredient is healthy. It’s a great way to start your day.

First of all, I am a chocolate lover, so today I knew I wanted the smoothie to be chocolate. Since strawberries were looking so beautiful at the grocery store, I thought they would be great for my fruit topping. I added some protein powder because protein always gives me a lift in the morning. From there, it was basically food play with all the nuts, seeds, fruit, and coconut I had laying around.

To make the base, I used a frozen half of an avocado. I always buy a bunch of avocados, and inevitably some will get thrown away because I didn’t get a chance to use them. Now I freeze them before they go bad. They are perfect for this smoothie bowl because the avocados are what make it rich and creamy. Don’t worry about it having a funny taste because you won’t taste the avocado at all. It doesn’t have to be frozen, but it does make the smoothie cold. The other ingredients are cacao powder, almond milk, chocolate protein powder, and a bit of vanilla stevia.

Now comes the fun part, decorating your bowl. I love cutting strawberries into hearts. All you have to do is round off the tops of individual slices to make them heart shaped. The strawberries became my flower, and some toasted coconut, along with chia seeds, became my flower center. I also added slivered almonds, pumpkin seeds, goji berries, and a few mini chocolate chips. I used dairy-free chocolate chips in this recipe.

I hope you enjoy eating this smoothie bowl as much as I had fun making it. Food can be tasty, and fun too. Plus if it’s healthy, well that’s a home run in my book. Remember you don’t have to eat this just for breakfast; it can be eaten any time of day and makes a great healthy dessert too.
