Nool Kol Sambar | Turnip Sambar



There are a number of health benefits in noolkol or Turnip. Unfortunately, we use it very rarely. Some of us use never use it. When I think of the times I have cooked turnips, they could be counted in fingers. I never knew the health benefits of turnips. That might be the reason. When I started learning the nutritional value, I started buying it often. It has become one of my favorite vegetables. One very simple recipe is this turnip Sambar. This sambar is very easy to make. It can be done in very simple steps. The taste will be more good. I hope you would enjoy making this.

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup toor dal
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • one large turnip

for grinding to a fine paste
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 sliced shallot
  • little curry leaves

for tempering | thalippu | tadka
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 2 shallots
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tblsp sambar powder

Quick Procedure
  • Cook toor dhal adding 3 cups of water, turmeric powder and asafoetida.
  • Cook turnip adding little water. Cook it till it becomes soft.
  • Take coconut, sambar powder, cumin seeds and shallot in a blender. Grind it to a fine paste.
  • Combine cooked dal and turnip. Add ground coconut paste and extracted tamarind juice.
  • Add salt and let everything boil once. Add the tempering or thalippu.
  • Finally, sprinkle some coriander leaves.

Stepwise Pictures

Add salt and let everything boil once. Add the tempering or thalippu.

Finally, sprinkle some coriander leaves.
