You Belong To Me

She told me it was all over and now I think that’s true. I was freaked out, but I assumed it was a joke or a prank, and now I’m not so sure.

Why can I still Hear her? Can you? Can you hear her?

If you haven’t heard of her, I’ll try to explain, but… anyone who knows, please message me.

The last bus had left, so there was no other option but to walk home. The rain rocketed down onto the pavement before me, and I cursed my idiot manager for making me stay late. I would have loved to get a taxi, but it was nearing the end of the month, and until payday, such luxuries were out of the question.

I gazed down at my girlfriend’s goodnight text as I walked, wondering when the day would come that I’d actually be home in time for us to go to bed together, and I guess I got distracted.

I looked up, and… I don’t know how to explain but, I was on an unfamiliar road.

I know my way home. I’ve had to walk enough times because of that stupid cow at work, but I had no idea where I was or which way I should go.

I tried not to panic, my eyes darting around the dark road. There were no houses. There were no cars. No shops. No people. Just a single street lamp up ahead, right at the start of an alleyway.

I couldn’t make out much down the alley, beyond a few trees.

I know it’s a cliche in the movies for your phone signal to suddenly vanish, or your battery to die when you’re lost and alone on a dark night, but luckily, I avoided both. The trouble was, it didn’t matter.

I opened Google Maps, but it told me I was still on the path home. I watched the little blue location dot walking towards my flat, despite me standing still beneath the street lamp. I couldn’t believe it. I stood, watching it for a few more seconds before I heard her, over the whistling wind and rustling leaves.

“All she does is cry.”

Her Voice rang out from the alleyway. I couldn’t see her, but she seemed to surround me. Her voice was sweet, almost playful, but as she spoke, I shivered, a chill chasing each bone in my body.

Something was wrong. The clock on my phone said it was half past eleven, but I could have sworn it had been half past eleven the last time I checked, minutes before. The wind whipped around me, cold and cruel, and delicately dancing up the dark alleyway, was her voice.

“She’s never going to see you again, and her heart is so broken.” I walked towards her voice, suddenly swallowed by darkness as I entered the alleyway. I turned to the street lamp but it faded from view, and all that I could see was darkness around me.

I wondered if it was a dream. Leaves crunched under my feet as I walked towards the voice, and I pinched my wrist, dread dripping down my throat as the pain confirmed that I was awake.

I followed the voice, my hands shaking more with each step, and the darkness seeming to dim further as I walked.

“I have my eye on you.” Up ahead, so faintly, I could see someone. My heart pounded as I got closer, no longer consciously choosing to walk, but simply being led by the night into her presence. “You will make such a pretty plaything.” She reached out a hand to me. I could feel it enveloping my own, and my blood ran cold. I pulled away, feeling her nails sink into my hands, her hand holding tight, frustrated growls falling from her lips. “It’s all over, you silly girl.”

I pulled back, crying out in pain as the flesh of my palms were torn to ribbons. Clattering to the ground, I held my hand close to my chest, blood pouring onto my clothes as I scrambled back towards the entrance of the alleyway.

“You belong to me now.” The street lamp above us began to flicker, and I screamed in horror as she came into view. She loomed over me, her long jaw hanging open as she spoke, dark eyes dotted across her face, more and more each time I tried to count. “You belong to me.” I struggled to my feet, running as fast as I could, hearing her bounding after me with a sickening laugh.

I ran, and I didn’t stop. I had no idea where I was going, but I just ran and ran, until at last, I found myself outside of my flat. I burst into the lobby, slamming the door behind me. She was right behind me, running at the door as I checked it was locked. She slammed into the door, her blood soaked fingers and long nails spanning across the window as she smiled at me through the window.

Slowly, I backed towards the stairs, my heart racing as I turned away from her and bolted upstairs to my front door.

I made it inside, leaning against the closed, lock door, desperately trying to catch my breath. Her voice still rang in my ears.

“You belong to me now.”

I had no idea what it meant. I walked through to the kitchen and found my girlfriend on the floor, sobbing as she held onto her phone. My Mother knelt by her side, holding her hand, weeping along with her. I called out to them, but they ignored me. I got so close, but it was like they couldn’t see me.

As I got closer, I saw the date on my girlfriend’s phone. It was June. It made no sense. Nothing made sense. It had been April just a few minutes ago. I tried to speak, but they couldn’t hear. I reached out, but they felt nothing. I looked again at the phone, and fell back in shock.

It was a news article. A girl’s body had been found in an alleyway across town. She’d been missing for weeks. She never made it home from work.

It was me.

I couldn’t believe it. I was right there. I’d only been gone for an hour or so. It hadn’t taken me that long. My body was right there, I could feel it.

I called out but they couldn’t hear me.

Can you hear me?

I can hear her. She’s the only one who seems to notice that I’m here.

“You belong to me now.”

That’s all that she says. She’s everywhere, watching me and smiling, while I try to make them see me. They buried a body. I don’t know who’s, but they’re all moving on as if I’m gone, but I’m right here.

I’m not a ghost. This is not a dream. There is no white light up ahead. I’m alive. I must be alive.

I can hear them. I can hear her. Nobody can hear me.

Can you hear me?
