Satire – Tomcat Tompkins – 105

Chapter 5 – June 28th – Early Morning

The next thing Tompkins was aware of was his head resting on the table as someone shook his shoulder quite vigorously.

“Tomcat, can you wake up for a minute?” It was Ralphie’s voice and he sounded as though he had some important news.

Tompkins lifted his heavy head off the table and moved it from side to side, to get the blood flow back to something like normal. He felt off-kilter and hadn’t quite regained his equilibrium when Ralphie continued.

“Webster reports that Daisy has not been back to her place and she’s not at the Chesterton-Lee address in Notting Hill. He suggests we try going to Stalky’s place as he and Toby and Cuthbert can see whether Dr. Black and the Rev Green are at home.”

“Does he now?” said Tompkins in an aggrieved way, “well, we shall see about that. It sounds like a plan, but I think you and Alex should motor up there yourselves and check what Webster has said to you. You know, just obtaining a second opinion as you would from a doctor.”

“Do you not trust Webster and Toby and Cuthbert?”

“I do, Ralphie, but can we be 100% sure, that it is Webster who is contacting you? It might be someone else trying to set a trap.”

“Good point, well made as usual,” said Ralphie.

“Thank you,” replied Tompkins, “I am wary we might be walking into a trap, so let’s be very careful. Filly and I will head over to the Stark place, for what seems like the umpteenth time and see what we can find there. If she’s there, Daisy will have company and that could make things difficult, so if you find nothing in London, please come back as quickly as you can to chez Stark as I don’t trust our opponents. Mrs. Stark had a gun with her and three henchmen and was well prepared. They knew when Filly would be returning. They’re well organised and we can’t take risks, but I might have to to rescue Daisy Henshaw.”
