Trends of Women in Tech

While Women make up roughly half of the total US workforce, the number of women in the tech industry and in technology roles is significantly less than that. Interestingly, if you travel back in time to the ’80s, you’ll see a significant drop in the number of women in computing related fields. Turns out all those computer games and pop culture geek movies had a significant impact on young girls wanting to learn about computers and technology.

Fortunately, over time we’ve started to see a renewed uptick in the numbers of women pursuing college degrees in computer science and taking on roles across the board within tech companies. Of course, there is still a ton of room for improvement, but it’s encouraging to see positive trends.

Women in Tech at Samanage

At Samanage, we declared last year the year of women in tech. While tech roles and the tech industry in general are still male-dominated, we’re excited to reflect on the continued growth and diversity of the Samanage team going into 2019. Nearly 1/3 of our engineering/software development team is made up of amazingly talented women with even more women in roles spanning implementation, solutions consulting, sales, finance, and marketing.

In honor of International Women’s Day 2019, we want to shine a spotlight on some of the women here at Samanage, so we asked them a few questions about being a woman in technology.

What experiences led you to technology as a career?

What advice do you have for someone, particularly other women, looking to grow their career in technology?

What do you believe young women need when considering technology as a career option?

“You have to be a self-starter with the landscape in technology changing so often. You have to have a desire to learn new things.” –Sarah Nielsen, Manager, Implementation

What’s been your biggest success in technology?

“My greatest success was moving out of an account management sphere and finding that there’s a way to still have that interaction with people from an engineering and consultative perspective.” –Liz Beckner, Senior Solutions Engineer
