Happy Halloween! Thanks for reading a haunting edition of Active Incidents. Less news, more costumes today. Let’s get going.
Terminate the Terminator
Yann LeCun is the head of Facebook’s AI research facility, and he expressed some disappointment to The Verge in how artificial intelligence has been covered in the media.
“It used to be that you could not see an article in the press [about AI] without the picture being Terminator. It was always Terminator, 100 percent,” he told the Verge.
LeCun thinks the misrepresentation starts with how far along the intelligence actually is, adding that for all the fears of super-human robot takeovers, general intelligence is “not even close to a rat” at this point.
In other AI news, Workfront released an AI survey of over 2000 US employees of large companies. More than half (52%) thought there would always be a need for human touch no matter how sophisticated AI becomes. The overwhelming majority (82%) were “excited to learn new things as the workforce moves toward automation.”
