Interns come and go, but the impact they make on Brains on Fire is something that endures well beyond their time in The Firesphere. We also like to think that the lessons learned (both the good and the nutty) during their internships will serve them well, wherever the post-BOF path may lead. We recently reached out to one of our summer 2017 interns, Ellen, to chat about her experience at Brains on Fire. Here’s what she had to say:

What was the most challenging part of your internship?

There was one day where Hayden and I were assigned an uncommon task to do together. We followed instructions, and it just wasn’t enough. We really had to improvise with what we had because we were on a time constraint. In the end, we made really great margaritas for everyone.

What advice do you have for future interns when it comes to getting the most out of their internship?

Your work matters. Double clicking on a follower’s post can make their day. Get excited. Find a passion for what you get to do everyday.

What was your favorite project you worked on during your internship?

Content creation for Family Trails. I enjoy the process of taking random objects and turning it into a visually pleasing post.

What was your craziest moment at BOF?

I feel like this question should be “What was your craziest moment at BOF today?” It is too hard to decide between setting up a gummy bear apocalypse, attempting to eat an entire stale cake, taking shots of tequila before 10 a.m., or taking professional headshots of Hayden’s dog.

What is your biggest takeaway from your internship?

My main goal during this internship was to practice content creation. Along with that practice, I learned how to organize and plan content for different mediums.

What did you learn about yourself as a person through your internship?

This internship really validated my desire to enter into this industry. This whole experience boosted my confidence to go apply for a job.

In what way(s) did you grow the most professionally through your internship?

I learned how to act like a normal human around people above me. Sitting down with Robbin, the President, was not this intimidating lunch endeavor. I realized that Robbin is a relatable gal who I genuinely enjoyed talking with.

What skill or knowledge are you leaving with that you didn’t have/know before?

Andrew took time to teach us how to use a camera, and I am forever grateful. I actually know how to use something other than my phone’s camera.

What’s up next for you?

I am entering into my final semester at Flagler College, so I will be graduating this December with a major in Strategic Communications and a minor in Advertising. I will be doing a social media internship with The Hyppo (the best gourmet ice pops in the world) this semester. Post graduation plans are up in the air, but I am hoping for a kick ass job that I enjoy every day.
