Google Business Group (GBG) is a community where business professionals come together with an aim of sharing their knowledge about Google web technologies for business success. Last year, GBG has launched a global contest known as Gbg Stories Search to find the most inspiring stories on how entrepreneurs and startups use Google technologies to be successful. There were over 470 applicants globally and Sparrow SMS from Nepal has made it to the top 9 finalist.
Access to data even in normal days is very difficult in Nepal due to its landlocked topography and limited infrastructure. And when the devastating earthquake shook the ground of Nepal on April 25th, it was very tough to communicate and get update on the status of missing bodies. Since 90% of population in Nepal carries mobile phones, Sparrow SMS believed mobile technology (SMS or text messaging) is the most reliable form of communication even during crisis. Hence, after Google activated Person Finder within few minutes of disaster, Sparrow SMS integrated an SMS short code that linked its app to major telecom services in Nepal (such as NT, Ncell), allowing easy, reliable querying and reporting into the Google database.
