The Benefits of Artesian Well Drilling

The Benefits Of Artesian Well Drilling

First drilled by Carthusian monks in Artois, France in the 12th century, Artesian wells have been a go-to solution for centuries in rocky areas where it is impossible to drop a surface well – where water is close to ground level. Artesian wells are designed to drill through rock below ground, often to a depth of 100 feet or more, and often draw more water than conventional surface wells which normally find water 25 to 30 feet below ground. These wells are ideal for homes or businesses where it is impossible to tap into a community-provided water system.

The Benefits of Artesian Well Drilling

Artesian wells are popular in many communities, and not just those where “city” water may be unavailable. Historically, these wells are popular because they: Provide more water than surface wells; Are less maintenance-intensive; Offer a lower risk of contamination; May increase the value of your real estate at time of sale; and are reliable, providing year-round access to clean water. Here are some other benefits of artesian wells to consider before making a final decision.

  • Water drawn from an artesian well is generally safer because it is pulled from deep underground, where there are no surface contaminants present.

In some cases, water that is pulled from a surface well may be susceptible to contaminants because of its close proximity to the surrounding environment, such as dirt, melting snow, or anything else that may seep into the water table.

  • Artesian water is considered to taste better than water drawn from a surface well, mostly due to the fact it is filtered naturally without the use of chemicals or other processes.

Some of the top-selling brands of artesian or “natural spring water” are Voss, Fiji, Nakd, and, of course, Nestle. In North America, alone, consumers purchase more bottled artesian drinking water than soft drinks, according to Grub Street.

  • If you drill an artesian well on your property, you may qualify for tax breaks.

Please contact your local community taxation authority for more details on the types of wells that may qualify for tax breaks and what types are permitted in your area.

  • In the long run, the water is free.

You will pay for the well to be drilled initially, as well as ongoing expenses such as electricity for the pump, but you will not pay because the water source is on your own property.

Finally, another benefit of artesian well water is the nutrition factor. It may be healthier than “city” water. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a “1-cup serving of well water from the tap is calorie-free and contains 7 milligrams of calcium, 2 milligrams of magnesium and 12 milligrams of sodium.” The same serving of city-provided water has about equal amounts of calcium and magnesium, but only 7 milligrams of sodium per serving.
