The Anti-Amber Heard Campaign, Considered Among 'The Worst Cases Of Cyberbullying'

18/07/2022

Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard was a civil defamation trial in Fairfax County, Virginia.

In the trial that began on April 11 and ended on June 1, 2022, the plaintiff, actor Johnny Depp, alleged three counts of defamation against defendant Amber Heard, each claiming $50 million in damages. In response, actress Heard filed a counterclaim against Depp, and claimed damages of $100 million.

As one of the high-profile case, the trial was livestreamed, and drew so much attention from both supporters of Depp and Heard, as well as the general public.

With the case finally over, and Heard lost, the internet is not saddened.

Instead, netizens around the world continue to launch campaigns against her, and also against her supporters.

According to Bot Sentinel that studies disinformation campaigns and online harassment on social media, the trolling campaigns during, and after Heard's highly-publicized defamation trial against Johnny Depp, is considered "one of the worst cases of cyberbullying and cyberstalking by a group of Twitter accounts."

To come to this conclusion, the non-partisan group studied over 14,000 tweets using the hashtags #AmberHeardIsAnAbuser, #AmberHeardLsAnAbuser, #AmberHeardIsALiar and #AmberHeardLsALiar, and noted the "intentional misspelling demonstrates a calculated effort to manipulate hashtag trends."

And that it was done "to deceive Twitter's algorithms."

According to the report (PDF), there were 627 accounts made dedicated to “exclusively” tweet about Heard and her female supporters.

Over 24% of the accounts tweeting and using negative hashtags about Heard were only months old, but result in "the average for other topics is 8.6%,” Bot Sentinel reported, saying that nearly 1 in 5 accounts tweeted with the hashtags "dedicated to spamming."

This number is certainly huge.

Bot Sentinel also found that the "toxic troll" accounts used a variety of methods besides abusing hashtags.

Like for example, they used the "copypasta" method, which is a method to repeatedly copying, pasting and tweeting content, in order to amplify anti-Heard messaging.

As a result of this, Heard and those who expressed their support via Twitter were "attacked relentlessly," often with "vulgar and threatening language."

Depp and Heard's two-month defamation trial was brought to live television and the internet, with billions of people following the dispute between the formerly married stars.

The two accused each other of defamation, and each alleged the other committed physical and emotional abuse as well as used drugs.

And the campaign against Heard, is kind of unlike many cyberbullying campaigns that came before it.

"What we observed was one of the worst cases of cyberbullying and cyberstalking by a group of Twitter accounts that we've ever seen," Bot Sentinel wrote in its report.

From 'Amber Turd' to 'MePoo', the campaign appeared to be operated by real people, not bots.

According to Bot Sentinel founder Christopher Bouzy, he emphasized how the anti-Heard harassment not only include harassment, but also doxxing.

In an example, Bot Sentinel detailed a case where a troll used photos of a Heard supporter’s deceased child to attack the person and the person's family members.

On its report, Bot Sentinel also said that the trolls that attacked Amber Heard and her allies are also attacking Evan Rachel Wood, who has accused Marilyn Manson of sexual abuse, and also Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide of Mark Meadows.

The trolls compared the women to Amber Heard, and used the same abusive tactics against the supporters.

"The accounts in this report violated multiple rules and policies of the platform, including but not limited to violent threats, abuse/harassment, hateful conduct, private information, and platform manipulation and spam," Bot Sentinel said.

It's worth noting that Bot Sentinel included a disclaimer in its report, saying that Heard’s team had actually contacted the group in 2020 to study social media activity about her.

The inquiry however, was not related to Bot Sentinel's study about Johnny Depp defamation case, which began in June.

Bot Sentinel said that it gave Twitter a copy of its report before publishing it.

"It's our opinion Twitter didn't do enough to mitigate the platform manipulation and did very little to stop the abuse and targeted harassment."
