Samsung Ends Intel's 25-Year Run As The World’s Biggest Seller Of Chipsets

01/02/2018

The South Korean conglomerate company Samsung has ended Intel’s 25-year run as the world’s biggest seller of chipsets after it posted its 2017 end of year financials.

The company's semiconductor division, has grossed a total revenue of $69 billion in 2017, eclipsing the $62.8 billion Intel reported during the same time period. While Intel's revenue was indeed a record for the company (6 percent annual increase), it wasn't enough to stop Samsung from claiming its throne.

The biggest boost to Samsung's semiconductor earning, was driven by mobile components, with the largest distribution coming from the memory business that manufactures DRAM and NAND.

Memory prices have increased to more than a double over the past year. But as demand continues to rise and Samsung grew a shortage of the chips it produces, the price went even higher. This helped Samsung in reaching its record high.

In this current moment, it's difficult to find a smartphone or tablet without Samsung's RAM inside it. What's more, the company also commands more than a third of the solid state drive storage Market.

Samsung won because it has changed its highlight to mobile. From its components and particularly memory chips which are the essential part of smartphones.

Intel still rule the world's computer market with it selling more than 90 percent of chips in the PC market, but it has lost to Samsung in the mobile market.

In 2018, Samsung plans to adopt “cutting-edge technologies” like foldable displays. Samsung said also that it would continue to develop its smart services with a focus on its Bixby assistant and 5G technologies. Apart from that, the company is also focusing its chipset business to power cloud services, AI and automotive.
