With 'Try it for Free', Apple's App Store Highlights Subscription Apps With Free Trials

Apple introduces a section on its iOS App Store that promotes subscription-based apps by offering free trials.

It's called 'Try it for Free', and the subcategory is located in the Apps tab and is initially the home to just four apps, including USA Today, 1Password, Panna: Video Recipes & Classes, and Lake: Coloring Books. If users choose the the free trial, they will be taken to a 'Subscription Offer' screen that shows the details on how long the trial runs, the recurring cost after the trial ends, and how to download the app.

All of the apps in this subcategory have offered free trials for some time, and this is how Apple is renewing its efforts to push subscription-based apps by encouraging users to try them out before committing to recurring payments.

Apple has dramatically redesigned its App Store in iOS 11, putting a stronger emphasis on human curation.

"We are thrilled with the reaction to the new App Store and to see so many customers discovering and enjoying new apps and games," ssaid Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

The apps have their annual, monthly, and weekly subscriptions all lumped together, so users here should be careful to remember the frequency of a specific plan, to prevent it charge them more often than anticipated. The length of the free trial also varies by app, so users should take note.

There is also the drawback of free trials, like accidentally forgetting to cancel the trial before it starts charging subscription, if they ended up disliking the service. don’t end up wanting the service.

Subscription-based apps tend to divide the user community. But still, the adoption of this model has increased.

Apple began incentivizing developers to sell their apps for a recurring fee instead of a one-time cost when it made changes to its App Store subscription policies in 2016. Usually, Apple takes 30 percent of app revenue, but if developers are able to maintain a subscription with a customer longer than a year, Apple will reduce the cost down to 15 percent.

Late in 2016, Apple also started allowing developers to offer discounted introductory pricing and time-limited free trials on auto-renewable app subscriptions.

This is based on the idea that subscriptions provide a higher likelihood of a more engaged audience.
