Ajit Pai is an American attorney who serves as the Chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He has served various positions at the FCC since being appointed to the commission by Barack Obama in May 2012.
It was in January 2017 that Donald Trump designated Pai as Chairman.
In February, Pai dropped an investigation started by Obama’s FCC into “zero-rating” deals, where carriers don’t count certain content towards customers’ data caps. Net Neutrality advocates considered this dangerous: saying that the rule would favor big content providers that can afford to pay for access to users’ attentions, in a way that non-profits, startups and normal internet users can't.
Pai was seen as the person behind the anti internet Neutrality. Letting ISPs self-govern and ending Obama-era regulation claims, Pai is known to allow ISPs to discriminate or charging the internet differently by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication.
What he did, was ending net neutrality, and put rules to control the internet. it's seen as giving the government the utility to control the internet by giving the privilege to the highest payers.
It started when he left his post at the Department of Justice in 2001 to serve as Associate General Counsel at Verizon. At that time, he handled competition matters, regulatory issues, and counseling of business units on broadband initiatives.
This was the time where he earned some high-profile connections that would help him lobby the end of net neutrality.
On many occasions, Pai regarded Net Neutrality Advocates as people that are "misinformed." He even posted a video on YouTube were he lists his reasons for people to not fear the end of net neutrality. Pai has also responded to net neutrality challengers by launching campaigns including naming the act "Restoring Internet Freedom" and explaining why his policy is simply “media hysteria.”
Because of his attempt to end net neutrality, many critics have attacked Ajit Pai online. Ignoring widespread outcry against it, protesters have even covered his house in cardboard signs.
Tim Berners-Lee who is the inventor of the World Wide Web, said that the internet should not be controlled by companies or government. And here, the end of net neutrality is like giving powerful internet gatekeepers the ability to threat innovation because they are allowed to pick the winners and losers by just throttling, blocking or charging services.
