Focusing On Progressive Web Apps, Google Shuts Down Chrome Apps From Its Web Store

Google is done with Chrome Apps for desktops. The company has removed the section from its Chrome Web Store.

What this means, users won't be able to install Chrome Apps anymore, leaving only Extensions and Themes.

The intentions to remove Chrome Apps began in 2016 when Google officially announced its plan. About 1 percent of all Windows, macOS and Linux users used Apps, so Google has little to lose. What're more, most Apps were nothing more than just bookmarks for web pages, so users won't lose much.

However, Apps is still available on Chrome OS-powered devices, like Chromebooks, and they’re accessible via direct links to their Chrome Web Store pages.

The popular Chrome Remote Desktop app won't be going away either.

As a replacement, Google is introducing Progressive Web Apps (PWA) for desktop.

Originally introduced PWA for mobile devices, PWAs are app-like features for websites, giving them the ability to provide immersive interface, push notification, "installable" app icon, offline capabilities and more.

PWAs already work on Chrome for Android. Once Google finalizes PWAs for desktop, PWAs would be the only Chrome app type to work across desktop and mobile. What this means, PWA won't be Chrome-specific anymore.

Chrome Apps came in two varieties: "packaged apps" and "hosted apps."

Hosted apps were basically enhanced bookmarks, which makes little to no sense on a real desktop OS, but still gave Chrome OS users a way to pin important web pages to certain parts of the UI.

The second is packaged apps, which could run in the background and access hardware like USB ports.

Both were desktop-only features, and Google is setting its mind to make them Chrome OS-only features.
