If you’re reading this, you’ve most likely decided that you want to switch gears and move. It’s time to pack up your belongings and move on to a bigger and better adventure. Before you start Packing everything up, here are the top Moving mistakes to avoid, along with tips to help you avoid each one.

1. Forgetting to research your mover

Since you want your things to move safely from point A to point B, it’s crucial to research moving companies before booking. Forgetting to research your mover can jeopardize your move and cause you more stress than anything.

Compare companies by researching their pricing policies (including flat rates and additional fees), online reviews, mission statements, truck sizes, and the number of movers. These factors can help you make the right decision on which movers to hire.

2. Too much time spent on packing

Although packing is a main priority during the moving process, it‘s important not to spend all your time doing it. The most effective way to pack your belongings is by starting and finishing one room before moving onto the next. That way, items are not lost and your attention will be focused on one room at a time.

3. Not decluttering before unpacking

Another packing tip is to do a bit of “spring cleaning” and toss what you no longer need. Moving is a great time to go through your things and pack only the necessities. It’ll help you save time and money in the long run. It’s also a great way to start fresh in a new place, rather than bringing along items that may be worn out or unused. Create piles for recycle, sell, or donate to make fast decisions during the process. Check out our post on Marie Kondo’s method for some inspiration.

4. Using the wrong moving boxes

While it is important to be efficient, you don’t want to overdo it by overpacking or overstuffing Boxes, or worse, using the wrong sized box. When packing, be mindful of the weight and size of objects. Moving experts recommend packing heavier items into smaller boxes, which will make it easier to move them, and smaller, lighter items into larger boxes.

Avoid the stress of placing your belongings in questionable packaging and carefully choose the appropriate box. Your back, legs, arms and other family members will thank you later.

5. Not taking measurements

Although it’s tempting to buy new furniture that matches your new place, experts say to wait it out at least three to four months after moving in. This way, you can know for sure if something fits and works with the layout of the room. Take some measurements of the space you want to place new furniture. Measure accurately to ensure that your dream sectional couch will fit into your small living room.

6. Not referring to your bill of lading

Your bill of lading is an agreement between you and your movers. This contract includes all of the logistics regarding your move. The date of the move, start and finish time, fees involved, contingencies, the number of movers promised, and other important details should all be in this contract. If any problems arise, refer to your bill of lading. It will answer and hopefully resolve any issues you may encounter.

7. Forgetting to label your boxes

Labeling your boxes will make a huge difference in your move. Remember to thoroughly label what each box contains, whether or not it’s fragile, and which room the items belong to.

Labeling your boxes will help ease the unpacking process. With descriptive labels, you’ll know exactly where each box is supposed to go and which items are inside. The can drastically cut down the time you spend unpacking, and you won’t have to guess what each box contains.

8. Disregarding taxes

When you move, some items are tax-deductible, which makes the cost of moving a bit easier on your finances. However, there are specific guidelines on which items are tax-deductible and which aren’t. Before you move, check the guidelines with the IRS to see which items fall under the tax-deductible category.

Also, remember to keep all receipts regarding your move. You may need to present them at a later time to verify you qualify for a tax deduction.

9. Disrespecting your movers

Your movers are people, too. Show your movers you respect them and the time they’ve taken with your belongings and they will treat your things with care. Moving experts say providing some refreshments like cold water and snacks is an effective and respectful way to show them you appreciate their work.

10. Forgetting to change your address

With all the hustle and bustle of a move, some things just slip through the cracks. One of the most important things to do during your moving process is to change your address.

It’s something almost everyone forgets to do during a move, as most people focus on the larger parts of the process, such as packing and planning their actual moving day. Remember to change your address so your mail, bills, and deliveries are dropped off at the right home.

11. Not packing an essentials box

We’ve all been there before—you move into a new place and when it’s time for a shower or a meal, you have to sort through piles of boxes to find what you need. Avoid the hassle and dedicated one or two boxes for essential items you’ll need in the next 24 to 48 hours.

A bathroom and kitchen box would be the best options. Put these items in large, clear containers so it’s easier to see what’s inside. A few plates, cups, and utensils, plus a pan could go into the kitchen box. In the bathroom box—towels, toiletries, and a few cleaning supplies. Don’t forget to pack a luggage bag with clothes and shoes ideal for unpacking.

12. Not getting moving insurance

If you’re moving cross-country or internationally, accidents can happen. Insurance makes sure you’re extra prepared for any mishaps along the way. You can get full protection from the moving company. Or, go through a third-party company and get liability insurance. This is often governed by state law, and plans will vary depending on your options.

Research your choices to find the one that works best for you, and don’t forget to read the fine print.

13. Not taking a property inventory

Remember the walkthrough form you filled out when you first moved in? It’s time to take it back out. Review the walkthrough list and assess any changes that have happened since you moved in. And don’t leave without doing a final walkthrough with your landlord. Honesty is the best policy here, so note any damages that occurred or any instances of normal wear and tear.

Take pictures and keep a copy of the inventory for reference. You’ll want it whenever your landlord mails you the remainder of your security deposit.

14. Not prepping for moving with pets

Moving with pets can be easy if you make the right preparations. You’ll want to pack a box with their essentials to get through the first few days, like food, toys, and bowls. If you’re driving, dedicate a seat especially for them, and consider investing in a pet seatbelt or carrier for safe travels. Make final vet appointments and ensure they’re up to date on shots or medications, and grab any files you may need to establish care in a new city.
