Choosing the Correct Freight Forwarder

Choosing the correct freight forwarder for your transportation needs can prove to be a difficult task. You have to factor in cost effectiveness, proper packaging and distribution of goods, quick and efficient delivery etc. So how does one choose from the numerous freight forwarding companies out there? The following factors will help you narrow down your search-

  1.   Do proper research.

This is very important. Is your cargo to be shipped domestically or internationally? What will the mode of transportation be (truck/ship/air)? How will the packaging be done? Do the companies give you cargo insurance? How much paperwork will be required? What is the volume of cargo/freight to be transported? How much responsibility do these freight forwarding companies take for the goods? Will air cargo be shipped via passenger aircraft or main-deck configuration (which is more expensive)? If your cargo is going to move via trucks, will it be an entire truckload or less than a full truckload?

It is important to have knowledge about the resources and capabilities of your freight forwarder. Are they domestically available or do they have offices in companies the world over? Is their workforce experienced and skilled or do they just hire anyone off the bat? What are their emergency protocols and contingency plans? Who takes charge during emergencies? Learn the routes that they take while transporting goods, as well as their preferred carriers. If someone is offering you extremely low prices, beware because in these cases, they are more focused on fattening their bottom lines than transporting your cargo.

You need to be clear about these things and a lot from while opting for the right freight forwarder. Also learn about what the company expects from your. Be clear, be specific so that all confusion can be avoided.

  •         Negotiate

Don’t hesitate. If you feel the prices are too expensive or that there’s room for negotiate, then negotiate. This is easier to do if your organization is big; to make the freight forwarder sweat, involve your senior management and let them do the negotiations. Make use of the resources at your disposal – marketing, finance and IT, and use that information to get the best deal. You also need to know the internal value of your company; communicate the best combination of services and rates you can come up with to the freight forwarding companies you’re looking to hire.

  •         The freight forwarding

Once you have zeroed in on a freight forwarder, you need to take care of all the paperwork that entails. You will also need to have a face to face, or at least a telephonic conversation with the staff of the forwarding company so that you can be briefed about the various processes involved in the transportation of your goods, the transport schedule, implementation of the schedule etc.

There are numerous freight forwarding companies out there; we’re not saying some are superior than the rest, but the fact that some companies are better suited to your unique needs than others. A thorough research on choosing the correct freight forwarder can go a long way for you, hopefully developing into a healthy relationship of mutual respect and trust.
