Why Repealing Net Neutrality Could Hurt Startups and Small Businesses

In the United States, 99.7 % of businesses have fewer than 500 employees. Net Neutrality Rules allowed them to compete with industry giants online and protected them against network providers hiking up prices based on bandwidth. This is might come to an end.

The internet is booming with small businesses and startups, and this is about to come to end. And that’s because the cost of doing business on the internet may be about to rise.

A proposal by the Federal Communications Commission would undo so-called Net Neutrality rules and allow Internet Service Providers to adjust website delivery speeds and charge customers extra for access. Rolling back those regulations means small and medium sized businesses may not have a level playing field against their industry giant competitors with deep pockets that could pay for faster speeds or to block their competitors’ pages altogether.

This doesn’t have the power to affect just the neighborhood businesses down the street, but the vast majority of the workforce in the United States. In the United States, 99.7 percent of all businesses have fewer than 500 employees, and of those, nearly 80 percent, or more than 23 million enterprises, are one-person operations.

For many SMBs these new rules could fundamentally decide whether or not they do business anymore. With these new rules internet service providers could manipulate traffic speeds to create fast lanes, caps, and block access to certain sites, charging fees to lift the restrictions. Small enterprises would struggle to pay, leaving them behind the industry giants.

This comes at a time when online users are more demanding than ever. Research from Google shows if a visitor has to wait more than three seconds for a mobile site to load, they will abandon their search half the time.

Pay-to-play internet means innovative new content services won’t have a fair chance to thrive, and not before long, entrepreneurs may stop creating it altogether.
