Widespread AT&T outage takes down Tesla Nav and app connectivity for US customers

Reports from Tesla Owners across Los Angeles, Daytona Beach, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Sarasota, Indianapolis, Central Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Virginia, coming in via Tesla’s official Forum and TMC, indicate that service disruption began at approximately 12:30 pm PDT. As of 3:20 pm outages were still on going.

With the loss of internet Connectivity to and from the vehicle, owners using the Tesla app to adjust climate control settings remotely were prompted with a “a connection to the vehicle could not be made” message. Users reported, “trying to turn on the A/C using the Tesla app and it reported it was waking my car.” Several minutes later, the app eventually times out with the message “A connection to the Vehicle Could Not Be Made.”

Tesla uses Google Maps for its Navigation system which also stopped working. A user reports “UI said I was in 3G. Turned on my Verizon hotspot and connected the car. Everything started working right away.” Calls by owners to Tesla’s Owner Support hotline were acknowledged with a reply from the company indicating that “it is Tesla’s problem, system wide, and they’re working it.”

With over 2 billion miles driven by Tesla owners and data collected from its fleet using AT&T as the backbone for connectivity, the temporary outage highlights the significance of Tesla’s reliance on service providers for its smart device on wheels. Today’s disruption shows that the network is a single point of failure, something that we’re sure is presenting itself as a perfect use case for the need for redundancy.
