Tesla China delivers 28.2k vehicles in July amid Giga Shanghai upgrades

Tesla China delivered 28,217 vehicles in July amid Giga Shanghai upgrades to improve Model 3 and Model Y output.

Tesla exported 19,756 vehicles from Giga Shanghai in July. Recently, a bunch of Model Y and Model 3 vehicles arrived in Australia and New Zealand. The first Model Y deliveries have reportedly started in Australia, while New Zealand deliveries are expected to begin soon.

The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) reported that Tesla’s share in China’s new energy vehicle market was 1.7%, down 2.2% year-over-year. Overall, new energy sales in China were 26.7% in July, up 11.9% compared to July 2021.

Tesla Giga Shanghai output expected to reach ~3,000 vehicles per day after factory upgrades

Tesla Giga Shanghai Upgrades

Tesla China’s July numbers decreased because Giga Shanghai temporarily halted production to upgrade its Model 3 and Model Y assembly lines. Giga shanghai finished upgrading the Model Y assembly line in mid-July. Upgrades to the Model 3 assembly line were expected to finish by August 7, with production restarting on August 8.

Tesla Giga Shanghai’s production has been hit by tough challenges this year with shutdowns due to COVID outbreaks. However, Tesla China reported its highest EV sales in June. It sold 78,000 units in June, with a 142% month-over-month increase. Tesla Giga Shanghai produced 33,544 vehicles in May and only 10,757 cars in April.

Tesla’s 2022 Production Goal

Tesla Giga Shanghai’s April to June production numbers reveal that the factory can ramp its output quickly, even after stopping operations for some time. With the upgrades presumably complete, it will be interesting to see Giga Shanghai’s August numbers.

In Q1 2022, Tesla reported 310,048 deliveries, despite Giga Shanghai production being hampered by shutdowns in the last few critical weeks of the quarter. And Tesla China was only operating with one shift in the second quarter.

Tesla reported 254,695 deliveries in Q2 2022. In total, Tesla delivered 564,743 vehicles in the first half of 2022.

During the last earnings call, Tesla reiterated its goal to grow by over 50% by the end of the year. Elon Musk added that Tesla aimed to achieve a 2 million vehicle run rate by the end of the year. With the Fremont Factory, Giga Shanghai, Giga Berlin, and its new headquarters in Austin, Tesla has a good chance of meeting its goal.
