Terrariums have become increasingly popular for so many reasons. Not only are people buying them for themselves, but they are also sent as gifts. These plants make excellent gifts for all occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries or to wish somebody well. If you don’t know what they are or how they work, here’s what you need to know.

What is a terrarium?

Terrariums are miniature eco-systems. They are known for being self-sustaining and they require minimal care. Once set up and arranged, you will only need to follow some very basic care instructions to keep it beautiful and healthy. They also consist of just a few basic items. How do they work?

When you take one look at this mini garden, you may wonder just how terrariums work. Well, the concept is really quite simple. Sunlight causes the water inside the terrarium to evaporate. Since they consist of an almost completely closed container, this water does not completely disappear from this controlled environment. You will notice humidity gather on the side of the glass. From here, it will flow back down to the soil and this will nourish and hydrate the plant or plants.

Types of terrariums

It is also worth noting that there are two main types of terrariums from which you can choose. These are open and closed varieties. Open varieties have a distinct opening on one side of the glass or plastic. Closed varieties are completely closed and you will usually buy them already perfect the be displayed without any planting or assembly needed.
