Product Highlight: A Running Shoe That Makes Runners Faster

At Mako Design + Invent, our Industrial design agency believes in finding inspiration through other innovations, since you never know where you can pull inspiration from. We found it fascinating when 3D printed jewelry hit the marketplace, and we saw products like Moonlite change the way we tell bedtime stories to our kids. Brooks’ newly engineered running shoes are no different.

The Brooks Levitate shoe promises a 72% energy return.

When we think of running shoes, we don’t necessarily think of innovation or how they can actually make us run faster. Running shoes have been around for hundreds of years but it takes an innovative industrial design agency to create a shoe that’s going to stand out among the clutter in the market.

To innovate runners, Brooks’ analyzed the impact of energy return for runners. Essentially, if a shoe has poor energy return it means that it dissipates energy as heat, which in turn means your muscles do most of the work to replace the energy that’s lost. Brooks’ new sneaker, Levitate provides a 72% energy return which although doesn’t sound like much from their previous sneaker which provided 65% energy return, this difference can actually make a huge impact.

A shoe with superior energy return is bouncy and springy which can make running feel easier and can help runners reach their goals. Many runners even have a line up of shoes in their closet that has different energy return levels and degrees of cushioning, etc. so they can tailor their shoe choice to their training.

The Brooks Levitate is the highest energy return yet in a shoe for the company.

Brooks’ pushed the boundaries with their shoes by teaming up with an industrial design agency and a chemical group to find a new midsole material that could go beyond what the traditional ethylene-vinyl acetate foam was capable of in most running shoes. They wanted to ensure the new material would still be suitable for a running shoe but help increase performance which is why they landed on polyurethane, a material used in things like tires, car seats, coatings on electronic equipment and more.

Although it can’t be guaranteed if these shoes alone will make you a faster runner, there is definitely proof that it can help. It’s exciting to see this industrial design agency and others continue to innovate a product that has been around since as long as we can remember.
