10 Swimming Pool Upgrades You Should Consider for Your Pool Remodeling Project

Tags: pool

Pool remodeling is the time to consider what you would like different about your swimming Pool. You may have purchased your home with the pool or installed the pool years ago.  So, look beyond just minimal resurfacing.

Here are ten areas you should consider for your pool remodeling project:

1.Energy efficient mechanicals.

  • Pump – An energy efficient pump is the best energy saver upgrade. It can use 30 to 45% less energy than the standard models. You also can use a smaller pump that does not need to run as often. New models also have different speeds, so you can use a slower speed on a daily basis and a higher speed for the more thorough weekly cleaning.
  • Heater – Today’s technology gives you more heater choices than ever before, from a gas or electric heater to one powered by solar energy. Or a thermal electric heater that uses the outside air to heat the water when temperatures are above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Other energy efficient mechanicals include lighting, filters, and solar pool covers.

2.Remodel the pool structure and accessories. Here, you have a lot of options:

  • Resurfacing or new pool liner – Not only will this improve the look of your pool, but saves doing it later as the surface or liner begins to wear.

There are all types of new looks in pool liners, and resurfacing materials come in different colors with the ability to integrate stones and other materials for a beautiful finish.

You also could just redo the waterline tiles for a new look, if the remaining area is in good condition.

  • Shape and depth of the pool – You can change both or either, which can add a dramatic effect to your current configuration.
  • Disability access – Today, we have swimming options for those who have issues with getting in or out of the pool. There are specialty ladders, lifts and ramps that can be added to your pool to help those with disabilities or age-related issues.
  • Accessories – In-pool lighting can change the appearance of your pool. Permanent benches attached to the side of the pool offer comfort to those who wish to sit and enjoy the water, while watching sunsets or others frolic in the water. A compact slide or new diving board can add to water enjoyment, while graduated steps into the pool is a nice change from ladders.

3. Automation and remote control. So many mechanicals can now be automated with timers – pool heaters, pumps, robotic pool cleaners, lighting, waterfalls and more. Many today can be controlled remotely, using mobile devices, tablets and wireless remotes.

Automation also saves energy since mechanicals can run more often for shorter cycles versus running several hours continuously each day.

4. Anti-entrapment equipment. A fairly new safety technology, anti-entrapment drain covers keep hair, limbs, and other body parts from becoming pulled toward or sucked into a pool drain. It works by providing a rapid vacuum release if the drain becomes blocked, saving lives.
5.Add an integrated spa. If you currently only have the pool, you might consider adding a spa that can be integrated into the new pool design. One that is positioned right next to your pool overlooking the pool is quite soothing and attractive. Or just next to the pool yet part of the overall design.
6. The pool cover. If you don’t currently have a pool cover or it’s one you have to manually put over the pool, even with a wench, then you may wish to install an automated pool cover. The cover will keep the water heat in and keep debris, pollutants and animals out. The automation makes it easy as pushing a button to cover and uncover the pool.

If you have an automated cover but it has been years since it was installed, you may wish to consider a replacement or one that is solar powered and heats the pool, as well.
7.Remodel the pool deck. Chances are your deck is outdated, having been installed years ago. This is a good time to change the look and feel of your deck, using brick or marble pavers or a spray deck material. While re-doing the deck, you can easily re-do the pool coping (the edging that separates the pool from the pool deck) with stone or brick. Creating a more interesting appeal with multi-levels, using aesthetic features woven in adds interesting elements to your swimming enjoyment. The new look can transform your pool’s appearance greatly.

8.Add a water heater. Having the ability to heat your pool will extend the months of use you get from it. It allows for year-round use, even for those of us lucky enough to live in South Florida.

9.Convert to saltwater chlorination. Most new pools in the U.S. today use a salt chlorine generator. Saltwater chlorination is much gentler on the eyes and skin, unlike traditional chlorine sanitation systems or even the ocean’s saltwater.

10.New aesthetic features. There are so many possibilities today to enhance your pool experience.

Lighting can be in the pool and outside it.

Water features may include separate water falls to waterfalls flowing into your pool or a waterfall from an overhanging spa into the pool. You can put a water fountain in the middle of your pool. All can be lit up in the evenings for added ambience, especially nice for evening entertaining.
Landscaping with plants and shrubbery around a spa and pool combination can create a more intimate atmosphere, as well as give more privacy.

Your new pool remodel is only limited by your ideas and available space; and any upgrade to your current pool only increases the value of your home. So, if you’re considering a pool remodel, think big. It’s easier to discard ideas than to add them at a later date.
