Why Have Fun At Work?

Why Have Fun At Work?

National “Fun at Work Day” is at the end of the month and it is the perfect opportunity for employees to relax and blow off some steam. Studies have also shown that when companies encourage their employees to have fun, people tend to be more productive and able to handle daily stress and problems better than those who are not happy with their jobs.

The same research also shows that when management makes the effort to create a fun and stimulating work environment trust, creativity and communication also improved, along with morale. This usually results in higher profits and a lower rate of employee turnovers, which is always beneficial to a business.

If simply participating in “Fun at Work Day” can result in these positive benefits for a company, imagine how well employees would perform if they always worked in a fun and energetic environment.

Using Levity For Success

Using more than ten years worth of research and input from thousands of employees the Great Place to Work Institute has complied convincing statistics that show how “fun” can affect the success of a company. Businesses that made Fortune’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” reported on average that 81 percent of its employees thought that their work environment was fun. While “fun” companies were Considered Great Places to work, businesses that were only considered good employers had an average of 61 out of 100 people who thought their jobs were enjoyable. This discrepancy in happy employees can have a remarkable effect on the success of the business.

Some skeptics of the research often question if employees at “great” companies aren’t having fun simply due to the success of the business, but Amy Lyman who is cofounder of the institute is firm in her belief that fun and company success are tied together. When employees are happy and having fun at work, they are more productive and motivated to perform at their best. She firmly states that it would be exceedingly rare for a business to make Fortune’s list of “Best Companies to Work For” if employees were not having fun at their jobs.

In order for a company to become a great place to work there are some steps management needs to take. Any safety concerns must be addressed, along with ensuring that management and HR is friendly and approachable. Issues of trust must also be dealt with if companies want to be considered great places to work, and businesses should be prepared to be patient with employees as these changes are enacted. One of the best ways to increase trust at work is to incorporate fun into the office. When employees are having fun company morale tends to be higher, and there is generally a higher level of trust between personnel.

While national “Fun at Work Day” only occurs once a year, you can use these same ideas to create a pleasant and stimulating environment that will help inspire employees to always do their best.
