Volunteer Recognition Day is on April 20th

April 20th is Volunteer Recognition Day. While it’s exact origins are unknown it is an unofficial holiday that is recognized around the world. It is a time to thank the millions of volunteers who tirelessly give to others without expecting a reward or recognition for their efforts.

Volunteering is an act that can benefit the recipient and the giver. It is defined as an act of kindness that is motivated strictly for altruistic reasons. Even though there aren’t any financial or materialistic gains from volunteering, it can still improve feelings or respect and self-worth in the volunteer. Socializing among volunteers can build teamwork, and it can also be fun. This can have the added advantage of helping them to improve certain aspects of their lives.

While April 20th gives companies the perfect opportunity to recognize their hard-working employees that still find time to volunteer, it is also a great chance for them to become more involved in the community they work and do business in. Even though some volunteers need to be trained for specific jobs, there are plenty of ways others can lend a hand. This can make a company a “better neighbor”. When communities see that local companies are willing to help business usually increases. Motivation and teamwork among employees often improves, and this combined can lead to an increase in sales.

There are a few ways that companies can recognize the volunteers they have, and celebrate this holiday with the rest of the world. Some simple and easy methods other companies have found to be successful include,

  • Find a local volunteer organization and donate in the name of the company. This is also a good way for companies to show that they want to be a vital part of the community.
  • Place a sign-up sheet for volunteer work where interested employees can easily access it.
  • Many companies are taking this day to thank the volunteers on staff. Some choose to do it privately, while others throw a fun employee celebration where their volunteer work is publicly mentioned.
  • A small award is another great way for companies to recognize their volunteers and here are a few suggestions.
