How Your Small Business Can Find Customer Love This Valentine’s Day

It’s almost Valentine’s Day and you know what that means…

Customers are searching for that perfect present.

Whether they’re shopping for a significant other, family member, friend, or even a pet, customers are flocking to small businesses — just like yours — to show their love.

Valentine’s Day spending increased by $1.6 billion over the past year, with $18.9 billion U.S. dollars spent! Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a small group of buyers. In fact, 54.9 percent of Americans celebrated the holiday of love in 2015.

How can your small business find customer love this Valentine’s Day?

Influencer marketing platform The Shelf highlights some sweet statistics in their new infographic below. We’ve picked some of our favorite trends for your small business to keep in mind this Valentine’s Day:

1. When it comes to Valentine’s Day marketing, aim your arrow at male shoppers

Men were found to spend nearly twice as much on Valentine’s Day gifts as women. In fact, in 2015, men spent an average of $191 on Valentine’s Day gifts, while women spent $97. Be sure to reflect this buyer habit in your marketing.

2. You don’t need to have the “typical” gift retail store to take advantage of Valentine’s Day

While jewelry, going out, and flowers are the top 3 grossing gifts for Valentine’s Day, 21.2 percent of consumers plan to buy gifts for their pet as well as their human counterpart.

Consumers spend twice as much on pets during Valentine’s Day than on Halloween, bringing in $703 million in pet present revenue. Do you own a pet store? Be sure to remind your customers that you have the perfect gifts for Fluffy and Fido.

Bonus points if you use our new Valentine’s Day email templates to catch the attention of your pet owning contacts!

3. Mobile continues to deliver love (and money!)

Did you know that 24 percent of mobile users plan to purchase online on Valentine’s Day? Prepare for this popular consumer behavior by making sure your website can be easily accessed via a mobile device. And it has never been more important to use a mobile friendly email template.
